One of the highlights of late 1950s and early 1960s was the development of "hard bop", a driving first-born descendent of the bebop era. The Cookers is comprised of many of the musicians who contributed to the development of this sound and to pushing the music forward from there. The band features Billy Harper on tenor sax, Eddie Henderson and David Weiss on trumpet, Craig Handy on alto sax, George Cables on piano, Cecil McBee on Bass and Billy Hart on drums. While giants in their own right, the members of this ensemble have performed and/or recorded with pretty much every jazz great of the past 40 years including Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Herbie Hancock, Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, and Dexter Gordon, to name just a few. Combined they have appeared on over 1,000 recordings including many of the groundbreaking and most important recordings in the history of this music.
The sultry, bluesy vocals of native New Yorker Catherine Russell is making jazz fans everywhere sit up and take notice. Her unique sound is a throw-back to the female blues and jazz stars of the 1950’s and ‘60’s. The 1907 Tugboat Pegasus and the Museum’s Lehigh Valley Barge #79 are teaming up to take a Tug & Barge Tour of the Hudson River, retracing Henry Hudson’s voyage and updating his vision to showcase the great potential of the water highway for public access and enjoyment, education, transport and commerce today.
From August 26 to September 1 the tour will dock at Brooklyn Bridge Park Pier 6 and then then travel to the upper Hudson to offer our programs to other waterfronts of New York State.
The Waterfront Museum teams up with the Tugboat Pegasus on many occasions to offer free programs that offer insight to our working harbor. The Waterfront Museum is delighted this season to bring their maritime education programs to Brooklyn Bridge park! Tug and Museum with also return to the Hudson (North River) where we will welcome both tourists and residents aboard our historic vessels.

Corona Children’s Choir will debut at the Queens Museum of Art
This concert is the culmination of the Corona Children’s Chorus Camp, the launching project of the Corona Youth Music Project (or “Núcleo Corona”), which has the goal to gather around 300 children from the neighborhood to sing together, coached by Finnish children’s chorus conductor Sanna Valvanne. The concert will include songs from around the world that will energize the young singers and the audience as they sing and move to the music.
Inspired by El Sistema, the world renowned support and advocacy network and music education program, hundreds of local children, their families and teachers will spend time this summer in the inaugural camp to help teach children learn skills and have collaborative experiences that leads to positive social change. El Sistema counts among its alumni Los Angeles Philharmonic music director Gustavo Dudamel who started the program at an
early age.
The Corona Youth Music Project is part of a network of people to create social change and music development for children regardless of resources and hopes to transform this Queens neighborhood by establishing a special camp for hundreds of children this summer to use music to empower them to change their lives. The camp was held at the Louis Armstrong Recreation Center on August 9th–20th. It will culminate with this free concert on August 21 outside the Queens Museum of Art for the entire community.

Corona Children’s Choir will debut at the Queens Museum of Art
This concert is the culmination of the Corona Children’s Chorus Camp, the launching project of the Corona Youth Music Project (or “Núcleo Corona”), which has the goal to gather around 300 children from the neighborhood to sing together, coached by Finnish children’s chorus conductor Sanna Valvanne. The concert will include songs from around the world that will energize the young singers and the audience as they sing and move to the music.
Inspired by El Sistema, the world renowned support and advocacy network and music education program, hundreds of local children, their families and teachers will spend time this summer in the inaugural camp to help teach children learn skills and have collaborative experiences that leads to positive social change. El Sistema counts among its alumni Los Angeles Philharmonic music director Gustavo Dudamel who started the program at an
early age.
The Corona Youth Music Project is part of a network of people to create social change and music development for children regardless of resources and hopes to transform this Queens neighborhood by establishing a special camp for hundreds of children this summer to use music to empower them to change their lives. The camp was held at the Louis Armstrong Recreation Center on August 9th–20th. It will culminate with this free concert on August 21 outside the Queens Museum of Art for the entire community.

Sun To Stars, our annual South Asian festival of food, music and dance, is turning 5, and we’d like you to come to the party!
The festival was inspired by the all-night concerts held along India’s Ganges River where not only are the talents of a wide variety of artists presented, but also a vibrant mix of families, children, couples, friends and random passersby as everyone settles in to relax and enjoy. The Solar One blacktop in front of the stage will be transformed with carpets and pillows into a South Asian seating area, with carpets and pillows for attendees to lounge on. Long Island City’s Five Star Banquet and Restaurant will be serving North Indian fare for $8 a plate; they’re known for their chicken makhani (butter chicken).

8/14/10 Bertolli Olive Oil Family Fun Weekends in Little Italy

Summer in Little Italy will present two special weekends in August, called Bertolli Olive Oil Family Fun Weekends, on Saturdays, August 7 and 14, 2010. The daylong activities will begin at 1 PM and continue through 5 PM.
Bertolli Olive Oil will partner with up to six local Italian restaurants to hold olive oil tastings from 1 to 3 PM on each of those Saturdays. The tastings will take place at a small table on the sidewalk directly in front of each restaurant. Bertolli will also provide sachets (15 mL packets) and recipe booklets for distribution to members of the public.
Each tastings area will be staffed by a Bertolli representative who will encourage passers-by and diners at the restaurant to sample Bertolli Extra Virgin Olive Oil by dipping a piece of bread. Bertolli will also provide 8.5 oz bottles of Extra Virgin Olive Oil to offer to restaurant diners for bread dipping at tables. The guests will then be invited take the bottle home with them, with a limit of one bottle per table.
Restaurants participating in the Bertolli Olive Oil Tastings include: Da Nico, 164 Mulberry Street (between Grand and Broome); Grotta Azzurra, 387 Broome Street (corner of Grand); Il Cortile, 125 Mulberry Street (between Canal and Hester); S.P.Q.R., 133 Mulberry Street (between Hester and Grand); and Original Vincent’s, 119 Mott Street (corner of Hester).
Families visiting Little Italy on August 7 and 14 will also find a number of child-friendly performers positioned along the Mulberry Street Pedestrian Mall, including face painters, balloon artists and even a stilt walker! In addition, a Bertolli representative will be present near the corner of Hester and Mulberry Streets to hand out Bertolli–branded balloons and coloring books to children and families.
And to top off the Family Fun Saturdays, there will be free outdoor concerts from 4 to 5 PM by singing stars Alfio (August 7) and Jenna Esposito (August 14) in the Performance Area on Hester Street between Mulberry and Mott Streets.

Join Joy Ride
Joy Ride is a a group bike ride set to music. All the world’s a stage and you are on a bike to watch it. Motion, music and mingling will transform the way you see the city. Its as easy as...well, it’s as easy as riding a bike.
Joyride is a musical group bike ride and picnic created by theatre artist, Liz Sherman with a soundtrack designed by Grammy-award nominee Duncan Bridgeman.
At it’s heart Joyride is about the freedom we feel riding a bike, the deep ways that music affects us and the power of that shared experience. Joyride takes place on August 7th, 14th, & 21st.
The ride begins each of the three Saturdays at 11:00 am at Foley Square, follows the Summer Streets route and ends with a picnic in Central Park.
Participants must ride with speakers or use only one ear bud as required by law.

Swim at Summer Streets
Summer Streets lets you re-imagine the way we use our City streets. MacroSea has done the same for the humble dumpster. They have taken clean, unused shipping containers and transformed them into code-compliant swimming pools, complete with their own life guards and pool decks! The pools were an underground sensation in Brooklyn last year. MacroSea is now excited to share them with all New Yorkers as part of Summer Streets. The pools will be set up near the Grand Central viaduct and free entry bracelets will be handed out for time slots on a first come, first served basis.
FringeNYC brings Theater to Summer Streets
The New York International Fringe Festival will bring FringeJR and FringeNYTEASERS to the Soho rest area all three Saturdays. FringeJR will feature family-friendly theater shorts as well as interactive theater-based activities for kids. FringeNYTEASERS are like movie trailers -- but for plays.
