Launched in 2006, National Design Week is an education initiative offering free admission for all museum visitors and hosting a series of public programs surrounding the National Design Awards.

People’s Design Award

Sept. 20–Oct. 12, 2010

The 
People’s Design Award gives the general public an opportunity to nominate and vote for a design of their choice by logging on to cooperhewitt.org. Voting begins September 20, 2010, and the winning design will be announced on October 14, 2010, at the National Design Awards gala in New York City. 


Educator Open House
September 25, 2010

Educators are invited to celebrate National Design Week by learning about Cooper-Hewitt's many 
education programs. The museum’s staff will share information about online resources, tours, youth programs and professional development opportunities. 



Teen Design Fair

Oct 12, 2010

The much anticipated event of the year is here! Join us at the 5th Annual Teen Design Fair. New York City teens are invited to learn about careers from over thirty professionals working in the fields of fashion, industrial design, architecture, multimedia, and graphic design. Design colleges from around the country will be on hand to provide admissions and financial aid information. Meet Tim Gunn and top designers from all fields.

Dates: Tuesday, October 12, 2010: 4:00-6:00pm

Helvetica is a feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. Directed by Gary Hustwit

2:00pm Objectified
Objectified is a feature-length documentary about our complex relationship with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. Directed by Gary Hustwit. 

3:30pm Hella Jongerius: Contemporary Archetypes
Hella Jongerius: Contemporary Archetypes is a 30 min film that captures the creative process of a designer, plus the “dance” a designer engages in with manufacturers like Vitra, Maharam and Royal Tichelaar.
