CITYKIDS and SHEPARD FAIREY Present “A POSITIVE THOUGHT CANNOT BE DENIED”

On May 2, 2010 Shepard Fairey, the contemporary artist behind the world famous Obama “Hope” poster, guided over 100 teens from The CityKids Foundation through his artistic process to create a 40-foot mural as an expression of the collective power of young people to change the world. On view at the World Financial Center, the mural features some of Fairey’s iconic images and consists of twelve 8" x 4" panels illustrating four socially pressing issues: youth violence, education, environmental protection and human rights.

Workshops begin with guided tours by young muralists who discuss their motivations behind each theme, as well as the creative and collaborative process. Tours are followed by interactive discussions on the power of positive thinking as a catalyst for change. Participants will work in groups to create “tableaux” or freeze frames to illustrate their thoughts on the exhibition’s themes.
