The Medieval Festival brings to life the customs and spirit of the Middle Ages. Manhattan's Fort Tryon Park is transformed into a medieval market town decorated with bright banners and processional flags. Performers, guests and festival goers dress in medieval costume. Visitors are greeted by authentic medieval music, dance, magic, and minstrels, as well as jugglers and jesters. The afternoon is concluded with a thrilling joust between four knights on horseback. Costumed vendors will be on hand to demonstrate and sell a wide variety of medieval crafts as well as food and drink.

The festival is free--there are no charges for admission or entertainment. Donations at our wishing wells are welcome, however!

The festival is held in the area surrounding the world famous Cloisters, a magnificent museum of medieval art located in Fort Tryon Park near the northern end of Manhattan Island. The park offers vistas of the Hudson River and the picturesque Palisades: a setting reminiscent of Europe eight centuries ago.

Have you heard the news? Riverside Park Fund has a Green Outlook.

Come on down to the banks of the Hudson River for a free Jazz Concert featuring the Dave Glasser Jazz Quartet and celebrating the $1.2 million dollars the NYC Council has awarded Riverside Park for its newest project: Green Outlook. Introduction by New York City Council Member Gale Brewer.

Green Outlook will transform an abandoned parking lot into new park land on a bluff overlooking the Hudson, between the new River Walk and Cherry Walk extensions of the Hudson River Greenway. But that's just the beginning. Green Outlook will also provide Park and Greenway users with a much-needed public restroom. By using solar energy, composting technology and a green roof this public facility will have no carbon footprint and will serve as a model of sustainability for future Park facilities throughout New York and beyond. Green Outlook will also include an equally green maintenance building for the adjacent public tennis courts and surrounding lawns and gardens.

New York City Council Member Gale Brewer has already allocated $1.2 million for this visionary project and we are asking Park & Greenway users to raise an equal amount in private funds.

Please join us, along with Council Member Brewer, for an evening of free jazz in the park and help us launch the Green Outlook Initiative.

For high school students preparing an art and design portfolio for college admission, please join Parsons and MAD for a Portfolio Development day on October 1, 2011 that is devoted to workshopping ideas and practices on building a competitive portfolio for college submission. The day includes hands-on "how-to sessions" on documenting work and writing to support your portfolio submissions, and roundtable discussions with professional artists, designers, and other art professionals. Art professionals will share projects and give direct feedback to students on their portfolios. Don't have a portfolio yet? That's okay! Bring a sketchbook, interesting images, or up to three completed works or works in progress. In a workshop that explores building a portfolio, students are introduced to the Parson's Challenge and will have an opportunity to conceptualize and develop an idea, and then discuss ways to turn it into a body of work.

The Dumbo Arts Festival spans the neighborhood of DUMBO, Brooklyn between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges, including the Waterfront. Parking is scarce and public transportation is encouraged, though if driving, use 45 Main Street as a GPS terminus. Biking or walking over either bridge is also a great way to arrive from the West.

Each year the DUMBO Arts Festival seeks to highlight Brooklyn’s commitment to and presence in the arts community by presenting the best in local, national, and international art amid the breathtaking backdrop of the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline.

The DUMBO Arts Festival attracts 200,000 visitors over 3 days with the participation of over 500 artists from a variety of disciplines, 100 studios, 50 galleries and stages and 100 programming partners. This year, the Festival will take place on Friday, September 23rd, Saturday, September 24th and Sunday, September 25th. The official Festival hours are Friday 6pm to 9pm, Saturday 12pm to 8pm, Sunday 12pm to 6pm and 6pm to midnight all three nights for all outdoor projections.

Art revelers can enjoy: visiting artists in their studios or making murals on the street; musicians, dancers, poets, performance and circus artists throughout the neighborhood, on street corners, sidewalk stages and in the park; communing with instrument makers in workshops; hearing from tech gurus about the latest advances; and joining walking tours to hear city historians share little-known stories of the neighborhood.

Help clean up the edges of Paerdegat Basin starting at 10 am (assemble at the club by 9:30). The wrath of Irene has left a very large amount of debris along the shores, much of it above the normal high tide mark. Hopefully by 9/24, the levels will be closer to normal, giving plenty of room to get in and pick up. No experience is necessary, but we welcome veterans who have helped with the BASH in past years.

Please be sure to wear appropriate footware, and consider the possibility of both bugs and sun burn. Americal Littoral will be providing us with supplies, including bags and gloves. However, the gloves are usually a thin cloth, so if you have sturdy work gloves, bring those along.

New York City Apple Day is a unique street festival where visitors can experience all things apple related. Right in the heart of the Big Apple, visitors will feel like “urban farmers” with countless varieties of apples--many transported from upstate New York from farms including Red Jacket Orchards. The day also includes many of the Lower East Side’s culinary venues (all getting in the apple spirit and incorporating the ingredient into their cuisine) retailers, cultural institutions, live music, and more.

New York City Apple Day--Apples on Orchard pays tribute to the neighborhood’s historical connection to apples. The Lower East Side was an apple orchard farm in the 1700s, owned by a French farmer named Delancey.

Join us for the National Apple Pie Eating Championship at 2 p.m.!

The Lower East Side Business Improvement District will sponsor The Apple Day National Apple Pie Eating Championship at 2:00pm, where a new National Apple Pie eating record will be established. All Pro Eating Promotions (http://www.CompetitiveEaters.com) will sanction the competitive eating contest and handle all contest related activities. The contest will award prize money to the top three finishers in the amounts of $500.00, $300.00 and $100.00. An additional $100.00 will be awarded to the highest finishing local resident.

At the festival, ticket holders will be able to sample an international selection of dumplings from cultures around the world, including offerings from Italy, China, Malaysia and Poland.

The Festival will also feature the 8th Annual Chef One Dumpling Eating Contest, one of the most exciting eating competitions in New York City. Come and cheer on contenders as they attempt to upset the record of 66 dumplings in two minutes! Attendees will also enjoy live performances and lucky draws throughout the Festival. We invite you to help us commemorate our joint efforts with the Food Bank For New York City in bringing public awareness to the hunger issues facing New York City. Look for the specially-marked Tang's Natural Whole Wheat Dumplings in Whole Foods Market. Proceeds will benefit the Food Bank For New York City.

What Is a Dumpling?

Ready to branch out? At the 3rd Annual Tang’s Natural NYC Dumpling Festival, sample what the world has to offer in the way of dumplings! The ubiquitous and much-loved potsticker is just the tip of the dumpling iceberg: each different culture will showcase different cooking techniques, regional ingredients and flavor profiles with their dumplings of choice. With everything from Korean mandoo to Italian ravioli, your ticket is your passport this September. Fillings both sweet and savory are steamed, boiled and fried inside a variety of wrappers that will take you on a culinary journey across the globe.
