Who doesn’t love that photo card from 1983 of the whole sweatered family at the mall, with its woodgrain border and bedazzled holiday greeting? Celebrate the schmaltz this year at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn with our Making Smiles Bright: A Holiday Photo Card Event!

On Thursday December 8 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. ET, Etsy Labs Brooklyn will be open for you to bring friends, family, colleagues and comrades to get your photo taken and turned into a holiday card.

Choose from one of three backdrops that we have hand-curated and decorated with merchandise direct from Etsy holiday shops and sellers (see details below), smile wide and bright, and leave with a digital file that you can customize and circulate near and far. Our long-time partners from the Magnolia Photo Booth Co. will be on hand to get those pictures print and sent.

We’ve also partnered with Moo for a 15 percent discount if you want to turn your digital file into a printed greeting card (discount codes will be distributed at the event). If you’d rather print at home, we’ll be leading small groups in workshops to make your own envelopes from paper ephemera (feel free to bring a favorite new or vintage paper to use). Every hour, we’ll be raffling off a chance to win one piece from the vignettes for use in your own holiday decor.
Choose one of these vignettes for your picture-perfect snapshot.

“I’m Dreaming of a (Black and) White Christmas”
So much of this season’s cheer is made up of holiday stories and songs that have made a lasting impression on us. This vignette will be decked out with seasonal decor by Etsy handmade sellers made from text, sheet music and other printed matter.

“My Yule Log Has Something to Tell You”
Cuddle up in a cozy sweater and wool hat in this Pacific Northwest ski lodge vignette, à la Twin Peaks. A pinch of surrealism and a dash of small-town quirk will serve up treasures from Etsy’s weird and wonderful side.

“Jingle Bell Bottoms”
Step back in time with this retro kitschy vignette from the seventies. The best of Etsy’s vintage holiday markets will be on display — from dashing disco decor to smashing shag scenery.

So dig out your holiday finest, polish those pearly whites and snap up a ticket to give your holiday correspondence an extra special touch this season — we hope to see you there!

12/1/11 TEDxWomen Event Live Online or at Paley Center

TEDxWomen--produced and curated by the Paley Center for Media and hosted by Pat Mitchell--is a one-day bicoastal event on Dec. 1, 2011, at the Paley Center in NY + LA. It will continue the global conversation that started at TEDWomen in 2010 about how women and girls are re-shaping the future.

What is TEDx?

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxWomen, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxWomen event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.

Watch the TEDxWomen Event Live Online Tomorrow!

For those unable to attend at the Paley Center locations in NY or LA, or attend one of the 100-plus local TEDxevents being held across the globe, you can watch the day's events via Livestream at:
http://www.livestream.com/tedxwomen

The schedule is below (subject to change), with the first session starting on December 1, 2011, at 11:00am ET/8:00am PT.

We hope you will participate in the conversation via Twitter, using hashtag: #TEDxWomen.

For more information and extended speaker bios, go to http://tedxwomen.org.

Her deep, honeyed voice intones what she calls “holistic new African soul”—a fusion of Jazz, funk, soul, gospel, and African music. Creating music that pulsates with the vitality of different nations, Somi shares a new musical tradition of transnationalism.

The star-studded holiday special will feature performances by Tony Bennett, Justin Bieber, Michael Buble, Cee Lo Green, Faith Hill, Carole King, Katharine McPhee, Javier Colon and The Radio City Rockettes with a mix of current hits and holiday classics.

The Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is a world-wide symbol of the holidays in New York City. The tree, traditionally a Norway Spruce, is illuminated by 30,000 environmentally friendly LED lights on five miles of wire, and crowned by a Swarovski crystal star. This year's tree is 74 feet high, 46 feet in diameter and weighs 10 tons. Tens of thousands crowd the sidewalks for the event and hundreds of millions watch the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony broadcast live across the globe.
