Cooper-Hewitt “On The Move”

Then exhibition galleries close for two-year renovation. The Shop and Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden to remain open this summer. Off-site exhibitions and programs continue.

The exhibition galleries at the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum will close Monday, July 4, as the museum embarks on an extensive renovation and expansion. Admission to the museum will be free of charge from 10am to 6pm on July 4 to mark the closing of the final exhibition, Set in Style: The Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels. Visitors can continue to enjoy the museum’s Arthur Ross Terrace and Garden and The Shop at Cooper-Hewitt, which will remain open this summer without an admission fee.

Beginning July 5, the popular “Target Design Kids: Imagination Playground” program series will be held daily from 10am to 12pm, weather permitting. A breakthrough play space designed by architect David Rockwell, the Imagination Playground encourages child-directed, unstructured free play through the use of giant foam blocks, mats and fabric. Tuesdays will feature storytelling and other special activities. All programs are free of charge.

Housed in the Carnegie Mansion, the museum’s main facility will undergo renovation and expansion, beginning this fall, as part of a $64 million capital campaign that includes enlarged and enhanced facilities for exhibitions, collections display, education programming and the National Design Library, and an increased endowment. When the museum reopens in 2013, gallery space will increase by 60 percent. During the renovation, Cooper-Hewitt’s usual schedule of engaging exhibitions, education programs and events will be staged at various off-site locations.

“This is an incredibly exciting time at Cooper-Hewitt as we prepare for the largest renovation in the museum’s history,” said Director Bill Moggridge. “We’re delighted to present our exhibitions and education programming around New York during the renovation, and look forward to returning in 2013 to a Carnegie Mansion better able to accommodate our growing audiences and increased demands for space.”

6/19/11 Happy Father’s Day from nycfamilyfun!

Until 7/2/11 Sing For Hope’s Pop-Up Pianos = Music Throughout NYC!

Got Hope? We do.
Sing for Hope’s Pop-Up Pianos are coming to a street near you to celebrate our vision: that all New Yorkers—from Rockaway to Riverdale, Stapleton to Sunset Park—have access to the arts. Each one of the 88 pianos you find on New York City streets, in parks and on boardwalks, has been painted by a Sing for Hope Volunteer Artist who shares our mission of bringing the arts to all.

From June 18 to July 2, enjoy impromptu performances on the pianos by members of our Volunteer Artist Roster—maybe a Broadway star, a local songwriter, or a ballerina. These individuals share one thing: a desire to give back through their art, and to unite artists with their local communities. We invite you to join in the fun by visiting your local piano, playing a tune, and spreading the word.

After the project ends on July 2, Sing for Hope’s Pop-Up Pianos will be donated to the local schools, hospitals, and community organizations that we serve year-round. We hope you continue to stay involved with Sing for Hope and, with your support, help us bring the arts to all New Yorkers.

The 2011 Sing for Hope Pop-Up Pianos, inspired by British artist Luke Jerram, is the world’s largest street piano installation to date, and is expected to reach over two million people.

You can also organize a Pop-Up concert around your local piano. Check out scheduled concerts or reserve a time at: http://pianos.singforhope.org/events/

Visit the website, post your Pop-Up Piano stories, vote on the favorite piano clip, photos and videos, and enjoy!

* Art-in-the street
* Activities for kids

One day a year, for the past 32 years, nine of the country's finest museums, all ones that call Fifth Avenue home, collectively open their doors from 6pm–9pm for free to New Yorkers and visitors for a mile-long block party and visual art celebration. This traffic-free, music- and art-filled celebration fills the street and sidewalks of Fifth Avenue from 82nd to 105th street, the mile now officially designated as Museum Mile. Over 50,000 visitors attend the festival annually.

Neue Galerie New York kicks off the festival on the steps of its 1914 landmark building on 86th street at 5:45pm.

Museum Mile welcomes its newest member, the Museum for African Art, slated to open in September 2011. Be sure to stop by their table at Fifth Avenue and 105th Street.

Plus, follow the mile with street muralist De La Vega—grab a piece of chalk and make your mark!
