The Vienna Music Film Festival is coming to Brooklyn Bridge Park! Presented by International Music + Media Centre (IMZ) and Czekaj Artistic Productions, the film festival will screen of a selection of classical concerts and opera performances recorded at many of Austria's, and Europe's, most prestigious music venues. These venues include the Wiener Musikverein, Wiener Staatsoper, the Opernhaus Zurich, the Waldbuhne Berlin, and others. Performing artists include Placido Domingo, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Anna Netrebko, Cecilia Bartoli, Renee Fleming, Jonas Kaufmann, Rolando Villazon, and others. This festival has taken place in Vienna's City Hall Square for the past 20 years, drawing some 700,000 visitors annually!

In the spirit of the fellowship and unity that brought New York together in the wake of the September 11 attacks, Community Board 1 invites you to join us for Hand in Hand -- Remembering 9/11 as we stand together to show our resilience, unity and remembrance.

On Saturday, September 10th, 2011 at 8:46am, we will commemorate the 10 year anniversary of the September 11th attacks, when thousands of people will grasp hands to form a human chain along the waterfront from the tip of Lower Manhattan heading north. We then encourage you to visit historic Battery Park where you can post a message or memento on our Wall of Remembrance, portions of which will be displayed at the 9/11 Memorial Museum for years to come. In addition, downtown non-profits will be hosting special community service projects throughout our neighborhood and we invite you to get involved and volunteer in the community.

Ikemen (Hot Guy) Contest

Join Hudson Warehouse, for their production of The Taming of the Shrew, written by William Shakespeare, and directed by Jesse Michael Mothershed.

In The Taming of the Shrew, we ask, is it truly love at first sight, or love at first fight? Are we looking for love, or for a project? Can we really change someone? Can someone with a strong personality, or will, truly be “tamed”? And such is the case in this Shakespeare classic. Petruchio comes to “wive it weathily in Padua,” and is immediately thrust into the world of “Katherine the curst!” Sparks fly, as do fists and thus begins one of the sharpest, wittiest and sexiest exchanges of wordplay in Shakespeare’s canon. And as the battle rages and the stakes are raised, the question begs asking, “who is actually being tamed?”

The audience is invited to sit on the stone steps leading up to the monument, with the north portico as the primary playing area (though actors may appear elsewhere on the site). A limited number of seat cushions are available. Reservations are not required, and neither are tickets since the performances are free. Performances, which run just under two hours, will be canceled for rain.

In the midst of high summer, Mitsuwa Marketplace’s parking lot, on the Hudson River side, will transform into a Natsu Matsuri (Japanese Summer Festival). Over 15 booths will be on display, enhancing the festive mood. Exciting activities and booths include yoyo scooping, superball scooping, kick-goal, quoits, and o-men (Japanese masks). Food vendors offer cotton candy, curry rice, hayashi rice, gyoza (dumplings), iced green tea, grilled lobster, grilled scallops, okonomi-yaki (Japanese pancakes), yakisoba (pan-fried noodles), yakitori (chicken skewers), shaved ice and more.

Taiko drumming performances will be held every hour. The festival culminates with Bon Dance & Taiko Masala Drumming from 6 to 8pm. Parking is limited, so use the Mitsuwa Shuttle from NYC Port Authority or take the NJ Transit Bus #158 or 188.

The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York is an annual sporting and multicultural event held in August on Meadow Lake in Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens, New York to celebrate the fifth moon (or the fifth month) of the lunar calendar. In addition to providing audiences with traditional Chinese foods and performances, the festival hosts over 120 dragon boat teams from across North America, making it one of the largest dragon boat festivals in the United States. Depending on the competitive division, teams compete for cash prizes, trophies and other prizes.

The Festival began in 1990 when the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York City promoted and organized the inaugural Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York, which was held on the Hudson River in Battery Park City. The Festival is now an independent non-profit company organized under the laws of the State of New York and receives its funding through sponsorships by various companies. The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office continues to be a substantial supporter of the festival.

In addition to the change in corporate structure, the Festival's fleet of dragon boats has grown from 4 teak wood dragon boats to over 30 dragon boats. Many of the boats are made of fiberglass. All the boats are approved by the International Dragon Boat Federation for international dragon boat racing.

The Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in New York features events for the entire family including the NY Championship Race on Saturday and the US Dragon Boat Open Championship Race on Sunday, an opening parade, and youth, women's, sponsors, media, and charity races. Moreover, an impressive arts and entertainment program will showcase some of the best multicultural artists in New York, including the Shaolin Temple Warrior Monks demonstrating Kung Fu, the Drum Spirit of China, and as well as other performers who will perform traditional music and dance from China, Mexico and Peru. Booths located around the main stage area will host folk art and craft demonstrations. And, of course, a food court will serve a culturally diverse menu. All its dancers are classically trained in Tahitian, Maori and Hawaiian dance techniques, and have performed individually in professional shows for over 15 years.

15+ artists will be demonstrating traditional Chinese crafts including calligraphy, rice doll making, bead stringing, kite making, jeweled ornaments, ribbon flowers, paper cutting and much more. Children will be able to try their hand at making their own crafts.
