11/22/12 Happy Thanksgiving from nycfamilyfun!

Thanksgiving Day
by Lydia Maria Child

Over the river and through the wood,
To Grandfather's house we go;
The horse knows the way
To carry the sleigh
Through the white and drifted snow.

Over the river and through the wood,
Oh, how the wind does blow!
It stings the toes,
And bites the nose,
As over the ground we go.

Over the river and through the wood,
Trot fast, my dapple gray!
Spring over the ground,
Like a hunting hound,
For this is Thanksgiving-Day.

Over the river and through the wood,
And straight through the barnyard gate!
We seem to go
Extremely slow,
It is so hard to wait!

Over the river and through the wood;
Now Grandmother's cap I spy!
Hurrah for the fun!
Is the pudding done?
Hurrah for the pumpkin pie!

11/1/12 Hurricane Sandy Recovery Information (New York City)

Hello friends and family,

New York, New Jersey and the east coast has experienced the wrath of Hurricane Sandy. The recovery from the storm will be a long process, but I encourage everyone to help your friends and neighbors if you can. Bus service throughout NYC has been resumed. Some subway lines are working but some have limited service due to the flooded tunnels. See the link below for the hurricane recovery subway map as well as Brooklyn to Manhattan shuttle bus routes. ConEd is working to restore power to areas below midtown. Schools are closed today and tomorrow, although staff will report in tomorrow. Many libraries are up and running. See the list of open locations below.

The listed website has a good list of resources and links if you can volunteer or would like to donate. I've copied some of the info into this post. Please be safe and take care.

I want to help

If you want to lend a hand to those in need.

Follow Twitter hashtag #sandyvolunteer for suggestions
recovers.org/communities has resource pages for several NYC neighborhoods.
If you have programming or web development skills, join a Sandy CrisisCamp near you to build crisis response tools for the east coast.

I want to donate

If you want to know what to send and where to send it.

According to FEMA, “the best way to support survivors of Hurricane Sandy is to make a financial contribution to the voluntary organization of your choice.”
Visit Aidmatrix to donate cash, goods and services to specific organizations to assist New Yorkers who suffered damage from Hurricane Sandy.
