12/31/10 New Year’s Eve Concert for Peace @ The Cathedral of St. John the Divine

Friday, December 31, 2010 at 7:00pm

The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine
1047 Amsterdam Avenue
New York, New York 10025
(212) 316-7490
Cost: Free. Seats are available on a first come, first served basis. Reserved seats are available for $60 on the website.
For ages 6 and up

The Cathedral marks the New Year with the annual New Year’s Eve Concert for Peace: a celebration of music, dance, prayer and words, to the light of thousands of candles held by everyone attending. This is one of the most glorious events at the Cathedral, and, indeed, in the city: the new year, still dark and cold, is welcomed with light and song as the Muses drop in to bind us to each other with beauty.

Guests—this year—include Judy Collins, Harry Smith, soprano Lauren Flanigan, mezzo-soprano Sarah Heltzel, Tenor Rufus Mueller, Cellist Mihai Marica, Conductor Daniel Spratlan, and the Ubuntu-Shruti Orchestra under the Baton of 2010 Cathedral Conductor in Residence, George Mathew, performing music of all the Abrahamic faiths including Mass in Time of War by Franz Josef Haydn; Lament, a Cello Concerto on Jewish Themes by Mark Kuss; and music from the Sufi tradition.

The New Year’s Eve Concert for Peace was conceived by Leonard Bernstein. On December 31, 1983, he conducted a program starting with Aaron Copland’s “Fanfare for the Common Man,” reminding us that wars may be dreamed up and promulgated by the rich, but they are fought by the common men and women of this country, and all countries.

General Admission Seats are free and open to the public on a first come, first served basis.
Reserved Seats are $60.00. Go to website below to purchase tickets.
Priority Seats (at a Sponsorship Level) can be purchased through contacting Dee Dee Mozeleski at: dmozeleski@stjohndivine.org

12/21/10 Juilliard Artists in Concert @ Goldman Sachs Ricker Auditorium

Manhattan, NY 10038
Subway: A, C to Broadway-Nassau St; J, M, Z, 2, 3, 4, 5 to Fulton St

In this most wonderful but hectic time of year, take some time to unwind at a free concert in the Financial District, where Juilliard students will ease your frazzled nerves with their soothing sounds. You’ll enjoy performances of such songs as “Georgia on My Mind” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” performed by Charles Yang, on violin, and Peter Dugan, on piano. The concert is an hour long, from 12:30 to 1:30pm, perfectly timed for a lunch-break relaxation session (and far cheaper than a therapist).

Free Tuesday Concerts
On Tuesdays, students from Juilliard’s music department present free lunchtime concerts at 180 Maiden Lane, a Lower Manhattan office building on the edge of the Financial District. Cultural attractions nearby include the New York City Police Museum, the South Street Seaport Museum, the American Numismatic Society's exhibit within the Federal Reserve Bank (free), and Federal Hall (free).

About the Juilliard School

The Juilliard School is a conservatory offering pre-professional training in its programs for music, dance and drama, with a highly competitive applicant pool. Its three divisions are College, Pre-College, and Evening (for adults). Julliard students regularly present performances, free or otherwise.

12/21/10 A Christmas Carol @ Jefferson Market Library

Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at 3:30pm

Jefferson Market Library
425 Avenue of the Americas
New York, NY
(212) 243-4334

Cost: Free
For ages 4 to 12

The Hampstead Stage Company performs the Charles Dickens classic. The play lasts 50 minutes and is performed by two actors in full period costume, each playing several roles with emphasis on audience participation. If time allows a question and answer session is included.

Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” is a story that is both timeless and universal. It is the delightful tale of the miser, Ebenezer Scrooge, and his clerk, Bob Cratchit. Through visits from the spirits of the season, Scrooge learns the true meaning of Christmas. In this charming tale, we hope to educate the students about the class system of Victorian England and encourage them to help others that are less fortunate than they are.
