Meet National Baseball Hall of Famer, Cal Ripken as he signs Hothead—the first book in his new kids’ baseball fiction series for kids, co-authored with Baltimore Sunsports columnist Kevin Cowherd.

About Hothead

Connor Sullivan is an All-Star third baseman on his Babe Ruth League team. He can hit and field with the best of them, but he’s got one big problem: his temper. When the sports editor of the school paper threatens to do a big story on his tantrums, Connor realizes he has to clean up his act. When he strikes out or makes an error, he’s a walking Mt. Vesuvius, slamming batting helmets and throwing gloves. His teammates are starting to avoid him, even his best friend Jason. His coach is ready to kick him off the team.

To make matters worse, things aren’t much better at home. His dad is having trouble finding a new job after being laid off. Money is tight. Connor’s dream of attending the prestigious Brooks Robinson Baseball Camp this summer seems like just that now—a dream.

When the sports editor of the school paper threatens to do a big story on his tantrums—complete with embarassing photos—Connor realizes he has to clean up his act. But can he do it in time to regain his teammates’ trust and help the Orioles win the championship against the best team in the league?

Harlem Postcards, an ongoing project, invites contemporary artists of diverse backgrounds to reflect on Harlem as a site of cultural activity, political vitality, visual stimuli, artistic contemplation and creative production. Representing intimate and dynamic perspectives of Harlem, the images reflect each artist’s oeuvre with an idiosyncratic snapshot taken in, or representing, this historic locale.

Take a look at Harlem Postcards: Fall/Winter 2010-11 in the lobby, then create a 3-dimensional postcard for your neighborhood or city. Use buildings, street signs, and other objects in your community as inspiration for your postcard!

Probably the world's only movie about handball, if there's one film in this series that is going to break your heart, it's FOREVER THE MOMENT (2008, 124 minutes). Based on the true story of Korea's women's handball team competing at the 2004 Summer Olympics, it finds a one-time player from the national team recruiting some of her now-middle-aged former teammates when she's asked to step in to coach the new national team at the last minute. Directed by Lim Soon-Rye, one of the few female directors in Korea, it became a major word-of-mouth hit in 2008, and it remains one of the greatest sports movies ever made, from any country.

The New York Opera Society presents a concert tribute to Paul Robeson (1898-1976), one of America’s most powerful singers. A 20th-Century Renaissance man, he was internationally renowned as a singer, actor, writer, and political activist. The son of a former slave, Robeson championed the singing of African-American spirituals on the concert stage, and his concert programs ran the gamut from classical arias to folk songs from around the world. His strong beliefs in social justice and the universality of man informed his choice of repertoire as a performer. He and his songs merge into an expression of the dignity and brotherhood of all mankind.

This concert features many of Robeson’s most famous and inspirational songs. There are songs of deliverance, from African-American spirituals to Mendelssohn’s Elijah. There are songs of workmen on the world’s great rivers, such as Robeson’s signature "Ol’ Man River" and the Russian "Song of the Volga Boatmen." There are songs of solidarity, including "All Through the Night," which Robeson sang to express his lifelong friendship with struggling Welsh miners. The concert culminates with his version of Beethoven’s "Ode to Joy," in which the virtues of peace and brotherhood are proclaimed in the voice of Paul Robeson.
