The Queens Museum of Art in Flushing hosts weekly workshops for families and children ages 5 through 12. This week kids can let their imaginations run wild while crafting three-dimensional models of futuristic cityscapes, using a multitude of supplies and building materials. The project was inspired by a relief map of New York City and its water supply system, a 540-square-foot piece created for the 1939 World's Fair that has spent most of the past seven decades in storage. The map is now on display in its entirety at the Queens Museum of Art for the first time ever. Children with special needs and those new to the English language are encouraged to attend.

1/20/13 Hands On: Blindfold Challenge @ The Studio Museum in Harlem

Sunday, January 20, 2013 from 2:00 to 4:00pm

The Studio Museum in Harlem, at Workshop A
144 W. 125th St. (125/Lenox)
Manhattan, NY 10027

For all ages

If you thought creating art was difficult, imagine doing it blindfolded. That's how performing artist Taisha Paggett made her colored-crayon performance series, Decomposition of a Continuous Whole, at The Studio Museum in Harlem. Paggett, a dancer and choreographer, used a series of predetermined movements to create rows of crayon drawings on a gallery wall, all while her eyes were covered. Children can take on this challenge as well, in a session that encourages them to become more in tune with their other senses.

Also at the Studio Museum, from 1:00 to 2:00pm is an interactive and informative tour of the exhibit Fore with a knowledgeable museum educator. Fore is the highly anticipated fourth installment of the Studio Museum’s “F” series, which includes Freestyle (2001), Frequency (2005–06) and Flow (2008). Like its popular and critically acclaimed predecessors, Fore is a non-thematic group presentation reflecting a multitude of ideas, approaches and processes. The tour will have something for everyone: adults, families and kids of all ages are welcome!

You can rsvp for any of the events and/or sign up for the mailing list.

1/21/13 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service: Honor Dr. King's Legacy (Nationwide)

CNCS

Monday, January 21, 2013 will mark the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday. This milestone is a perfect opportunity for Americans to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community.

Go to the website below to learn more about MLK Day and how you can participate.

What is the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service?
After a long struggle, legislation was signed in 1983 creating a federal holiday marking the birthday of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with leading this effort. Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a "day on, not a day off." The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community."

Why Serve on MLK Day of Service?
Dr. King believed in a nation of freedom and justice for all, and encouraged all citizens to live up to the purpose and potential of America by applying the principles of nonviolence to make this country a better place to live—creating the Beloved Community. The MLK Day of Service is a way to transform Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and teachings into community action that helps solve social problems. That service may meet a tangible need, or it may meet a need of the spirit. On this day, Americans of every age and background celebrate Dr. King through service projects that strengthen communities, empower individuals, bridge barriers, and create solutions.

How can I serve on MLK Day?
People of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities can get involved. Just fill in your zip code in the Find a Projectbox to locate a volunteer opportunity in your community or plan your own project.

Learn about Dr. King
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a vital figure of the modern era and a pivotal figure in the Civil Rights Movement. His lectures and dialogues stirred the concern and sparked the conscience of a generation. His charismatic leadership inspired men and women, young and old, in this nation and around the world.

Following in the footsteps of his father, in February 1948, at the age of 19, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. entered the Christian ministry and was ordained at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. In 1954, upon completion of graduate studies at Boston University, he accepted a call to serve at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. While there, he was an instrumental leader in the Montgomery Bus Boycott, made famous by the nonviolent resistance and arrest of Rosa Parks. He resigned this position in 1959 to move back to Atlanta to direct the activities of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. From 1960 until his death in 1968, he also served as co-pastor with his father at Ebenezer Baptist Church. Dr. King was arrested 30 times for his participation in civil rights activities.

While Dr. King preached about justice, empowerment, love and peace, in the final months of his life, his attention was turned to fighting poverty. Sadly, more Americans live in poverty today than during Dr. King's lifetime. Forty-seven million Americans currently fall below the poverty line.Dr. King was shot while standing on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee and died on April 4, 1968. He had gone to Memphis to help lead sanitation workers in a protest against low wages and intolerable working conditions.

Learn more about Dr. King’s life from The King Center website.

More art-making and exploring activities will take place until 4:00pm.

About the Technique

Sumi-e, also called Suiboku-ga, is the art of ink wash-painting. Characteristically, it is an East Asian art, and has been practiced there for well over a thousand years. Sumi-e depicts the spirit or essence of an object or scene rather than its outward appearance--and does so in the fewest possible strokes. Because of this simplicity, the painter’s character and personality come through in his/her work. In both viewing and creating, Sumi-e is a very contemplative form of painting.

About the Instructor

Ayakoh Furukawa has practiced calligraphy through Nihonshogei-in since she was seven years old, receiving many awards. She also studied under Zen monk calligrapher and painter Sougyu Kashimoto in Osaka, Japan. In New York, she studied Japanese and Chinese Art History at Hunter College, the City University of New York where she received the Master of Fine Art. Her paintings and drawings have been exhibited internationally at numerous art institutions such as Japan Society, Jersey City Museum and the Osaka Municipal Museum of Art.

How to 'Chip In.'
This year, MulchFest will take place on January 12 and 13, 2013. It’s easier than ever to chip in! There are two ways you can help.

What to Bring
Please remember to remove all lights and ornaments before bringing the tree to a MulchFest site. Biodegradable bags will be provided if you wish to take some free mulch home. (At website, mulch is available at the map sites marked with an asterisk (*).)

1/1/13 Happy New Year from nycfamilyfun!

The Year

by Ella Wheeler Wilcox
What can be said in New Year rhymes,
That's not been said a thousand times?

The new years come, the old years go,
We know we dream, we dream we know.

We rise up laughing with the light,
We lie down weeping with the night.

We hug the world until it stings,
We curse it then and sigh for wings.

We live, we love, we woo, we wed,
We wreathe our brides, we sheet our dead.

We laugh, we weep, we hope, we fear,
And that's the burden of the year.
