BAM will host a full MLK Day of festivities, starting at 10:30am at the BAM Howard Gilman Opera House with keynote speaker Dennis M. Walcott, chancellor of the New York City Department of Education. Walcott will recognize Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, along with musical performers Toshi Reagon and BIGLovely, as well as The Institutional Radio Choir, of the Institutional Church of God in Christ International of Brooklyn. Later, head to BAM Rose Cinemas for a 1pm screening of The Black Power Mixtape 1967–1975, a documentary by Swedish filmmaker Göran Hugo Olsson, featuring interviews with Angela Davis, Stokely Carmichael and other leaders of the Black Power movement. Round out the day by checking out Picture the Dream, an exhibition of collages from New York City Housing Authority residents in Brooklyn ages 13 and younger, from 1 to 6pm at BAMcafé.
