7/12/09 Target High Line Street Festival

Sunday, July 12, 2009 from 12 noon - 5pm
On Gansevoort Street, between Ninth Avenue and Washington Street
Cost: Free

Join us on Sunday, July 12 for the Target High Line Street Festival — a free, fun-for-the-whole-family party celebrating the opening of the first section of the High Line. The occasion will also mark the 10th Anniversary of Friends of the High Line and the 75th Anniversary of the High Line itself.

The festival will feature internationally-acclaimed artists, inflatable sculptures, cowboys, story-tellers, marching bands, swing bands, salsa bands (some on a roof-top stage), and an exciting array of hands-on activities including a special Target
“Hi from the High Line!” photo postcard experience for kids of all ages.

With a focus on sustainability, the festival brings together some of the healthiest and tastiest foods for a special greenmarket. While there, it will be hard to miss the
World’s Largest Lemonade Stand, with well over a thousand gallons of fresh lemonade blended inside a specially-designed Rosenwach rooftop water tank. Children can also enjoy a live reading of Peter Brown’s bestselling, High Line-inspired children's book The Curious Garden. Come join us to celebrate the historic opening of the High Line.

Many thanks to Target for making this event possible.

New York, NY
Subway: N,R, Q, W, M, Z and 6 trains to Canal Street
Bus: M9, M15 and M103

Founded in 1980, Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) is dedicated to preserving and presenting the history, heritage, culture and diverse experiences of people of Chinese descent in the United States. The Museum brins 160 years of Chinese American history to vivid life through its innovative exhibitions, educational and cultural programs.

The New MOCA
Designed by renowned artist/designer Maya Lin, MOCA’s new home is a 14,000 square foot space featuring multiple exhibition galleries, interactive visitor kiosks, a multi-purpose auditorium/classroom, a research center, and a flexible space for various multidisciplinary public programs. MOCA is on its way to achieving LEED SILVER certification—incorporating environmentally sustainable design solutions throughout the museum.

The design juxtaposes the past wth the present while creating new spaces that redefine the identity of the building. At the heart of the museum is its historic skylit courtyard, left deliberately raw and untouched, that harkens back to the memory of a Chinese courtyard house or of the past. Each room of the core exhibition wraps around this courtyard and short biographic films are projected onto the glass windows facing the courtyard to give a glimpse of the stories and faces of Chinese Amercans through history—from the 1850s to the present day.

The open house weekend launches an exciting summer of programs, all of which can be found at: http://www.mocanyc.org/summer2009

ONGOING:
Free admission for all on Thursdays 11am – 9pm, sponsored by Target.

Happy Father’s Day!

“A man never stands as tall as when he kneels to help a child.”—Knights of Pythagoras

Fatherhood is the ultimate lesson in humility—which most of us realize the first time they hear our newborn baby cry. (And if we missed that moment, then we definitely eat some humble pie the first time our little one spits up all over our new suit—just as we are rushing to an important meeting.) Children change not only the particulars of our lives—but our priorities. And once we embrace that change, our lives can become more meaningful than ever before.

Thank you Daddy and Grandpas for all the love and support you give us throughout the year! Happy Father’s Day!
