Kids are invited to borrow a hardhat and work side-by-side with carpenters and builders, learning how to measure, saw, hammer, and mix cement—using real tools and safety equipment! Participants also learn how to read a blueprint and translate a 2-D diagram into a 3-D structure, what makes up the skeleton of a building, how the arm of a crane sweeps a girder or I-beam into place—and about the load-bearing walls, plumbing, electric, ventilation, and elevators that are hidden within every building. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Tip: After this event, go to the “Bang on a Can” music marathon just a few blocks south at the World Financial Center—see following post for more details!
