Note from BigAppleMommy: Poets House relocated to a beautiful new space in Battery Park City in September 2009. Spacious and relaxing with a friendly staff, it is a great spot to visit.
After the reading, take the kids to the huge playground directly across the street at Rockefeller Park. If you walk north, there is a zany sculpture park called “The Real World” with art by Tom Otterness—kids LOVE these sculptures of silly little people and animals. The walk going south along the river to Battery Park is very scenic and relaxing. Another great (and free) place to visit about a mile away is the National Museum of the American Indian (http://www.nmai.si.edu/subpage.cfm?subpage=visitor&second=ny) or take a ride on the Staten Island ferry (http://www.siferry.com/). The free Connections bus can take you to these locations (http://www.downtownny.com/downtownconnection/ ).
Within walking distance to Poets House is Barnes & Nobles and Bed Bath & Beyond at 97 Warren St. (betw Greenwich St. & West St.) and Whole Foods at 270 Greenwich St. (entrances on either Greenwich St. or West St., betw Warren & Murray Sts.). This huge Whole Foods has a nice Salad/Food bar and a huge, airy place to eat and rest on the 2nd Floor.
There is a good Downtown/Battery Park City area map with the free Connections bus route on it as well as parking lots and subway stops indicated. Go to: http://www.downtownny.com/downtownconnection/
