The Journey is an original stage play written and directed by Shuga Henry, debuting in Jamaica, Queens. The play combines gospel, R&B, hip-hop and soul to tell a story about family, choices and survival for life’s incredible journey.

About the Show
The original Gospel stage play THE JOURNEY was written, produced and directed by Shuga Henry. The play first debuted in February 2008, at Southeastern, Louisiana (SELU), in Hammond, Louisiana.

The story focuses on Yolanda, a teenager from Brooklyn, NY, who loses her family tragically and abruptly moves to North Carolina to live with her estranged Aunt May, affectionately known in the communtiy as Mother Shaw. Yoland struggles to cope with the loss of her amily and living in a strange place.

Mother Shaw, with the help of her friends try desperately to reclaim her life and happiness. However, the journey to recovery grows intensely difficult, spinning out of control, revealing unpleasant truths and testing loyalties and faith. Yolanda is faced wih a decision that will either bring her and Mother Shaw closer together or tear them apart forever.

For a few short days every spring, New Yorkers are invited to enter the fascinating world of some of Manhattan’s finest artists. Now in its 15th year, The TriBeCa Open Artist Studio Tour (TOAST) is an open invitation to the public to take a free, self-guided tour through artists’ studios in TriBeCa. TOAST attendees are able to visit the artists’ studios, view their work and talk to the artists themselves. Those who take the tour will also have the chance to purchase work directly from the artists, helping to support them in the pursuit of their craft.

“We’re excited to offer a true glimpse behind the curtain that exposes where neighborhood artists create, what inspires them and how they do what they do,” said Ruth McLaughlin, treasurer of TOAST and a participating artist. “This is a unique opportunity to immerse oneself in an open artistic atmosphere of discussion and enlightenment.” Shawn Washburn, President of TOAST adds, “This is our largest art walk ever, with almost a 100 artists participating this year. The event offers the public a great opportunity to experience a variety of artistic styles.”

About TOAST
TOAST is a non-profit, artist-run organization whose mission is to empower the working artists of TriBeCa, while providing an educational opportunity for the public. TOAST was established to produce the annual open studio tour, and to provide artists in TriBeCa a year-round community network. TOAST also promotes the integration of art into the TriBeCa community by disseminating art information and organizing events in the community with a network of community organizations and schools. TOAST’s Board of Directors is comprised of 7 members, artists with a wide range of experience in education, publicity, and social service.

About the Studio Tour
Last year, 80 of TriBeCa’s finest artists participated in TOAST’s four-day event. This year, the 15th Annual TriBeCa Open Artist Studio Tour features approximately a 100 artists of varying genres and will be held in 36 different buildings in TriBeCa.

Undergraduate students from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts will be presenting William Shakespeare's classic comedy Twelfth Night, or What You Will, the gender-bending tale wherein Olivia falls in love with Cesario (who is actually Viola in disguise). The production is entirely student-run and will be staged in Washington Square Park's Holly Plaza, per the vision of Shakespeare in the Square's student founders, who wanted to present the Bard's works the way they were originally meant to be performed: "under the sun and in front of a loud, standing, possibly distracted audience." (This is the romantic explanation for why there is no seating, but you could always improvise or bring your own.)

The Tribeca Family Festival once again invites you to the ultimate street fair and family celebration, where a dazzling array of activities and performances unfold downtown in Tribeca.

Our Festival stages will feature special performances from Broadway shows along with emerging talent from right here in Tribeca. Local restaurants and merchants will offer Tribeca's finest foods, refreshments, and merchandise. And local schools will sponsor a variety of fundraising activities, from taekwondo lessons to hairspray painting.

Also at the Street Fair will be FREE screenings of two Family Festival films that audiences of all ages will enjoy. The Second Day, a documentary about 9/11 through a child's eyes, will be screened at 2:30pm to be followed by a short panel discussion. NIKO, a lively animation film, will begin at 4:00pm. Both screenings will be shown at BMCC Tribeca PAC (at 199 Chambers Street, between Greenwich & West Streets). Lines at BMCC begin 30 mins prior to the start of each screening. Admission to the gorgeous grounds of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is free all day every Tuesday, but this is no ordinary Tuesday: it falls in the middle of the traditional Japanese celebration of hanami, or cherry blossom season, which runs through May 1. This is the perfect chance to see the trees in the height of their bloom, as the garden's 30th-annual cherry blossom and Japanese cultural festival, Sakura Matsuri, begins just a few days later, on April 30. This year's cherry blossom season and festival are particularly important in light of the recent tsunami and earthquake that affected Japan. To show New Yorkers' support and to raise funds, the garden will hold paper crane–making workshops from 10am to 1pm on April 30 and May 1. The cranes will be given to the Bezos Family Foundation, which will donate $200,000 ($2 for each crane received) to Architecture for Humanity's reconstruction efforts in Japan. The cranes will be woven into a work of art. Even if you are not able to attend the festival, any origami cranes you make can be dropped off at the garden.

The Sakura Matsuri weekend celebrates traditional and contemporary Japanese culture with numerous performances and demonstrations:

The CO2 E Drive will begin from the Solar One building on 23rd Street and the East River at approximately 9:00am following an 8:00 am press conference with guest speaker Chris Paine, Director of Revenge of The Electric Car. From Solar One, the vehicles will embark on the CO2 E Drive route through midtown Manhattan.

Environmentally friendly vehicles (electric, hybrid and bio-fuel) will paint a huge, virtual “E” on the streets of New York using GPS technology. Progress of the vehicles in form of GPS symbols will be shown on screens in Times Square (the painting).

Following the drive, a select number of vehicles will arrive at Times Square (46th and Broadway) for a green vehicle runway presentation. The cars will remain in Times Square on display for the remainder of the afternoon.

Richard Pearson is a scientist at the American Museum of Natural History with a Ph.D. from Oxford University. His research has been funded by grants from NASA and the National Science Foundation, and his findings have been published in several scientific journals, including Nature.
