July 2011 New Amsterdam Plein & Pavilion Opens in Battery Park/Downtown Area

New Amsterdam Plein & Pavilion
Peter Minuit Plaza, Battery Park
(at Water & Whitehall Streets)

New York, NY

Near the Staten Island Ferry, the New Amsterdam Plein & Pavilion is a dramatic space where more than 5 million people a year, including 70,000 daily commuters and 2 million annual tourists, can find an extraordinary "outdoor living room" for spontaneous and scheduled activities, public markets, seating and shade, and an iconic state-of-the-art pavilion for food and information, all designed by internationally celebrated Dutch architect Ben van Berkel of UNStudio, Amsterdam. The Plein & Pavilion will be unique among the city’ many public spaces — a landscaped intermodal transportation hub of the 21st century, where bicycles, buses, the subway and water transportation intersect with cultural offerings in a singular expression of daring but lyrical design.

About the Queens County Farm Museum

The Queens County Farm Museum dates back to 1697; it occupies New York City's largest remaining tract of undisturbed farmland, and is the only working historical farm in the city. The farm encompasses a 47-acre parcel that is the longest continuously farmed site in New York State. The site includes historic farm buildings, a greenhouse complex, livestock, farm vehicles and implements, planting fields, an orchard, and an herb garden.

The farm is owned by the New York City Department of Parks, operated by the Colonial Farmhouse Restoration Society of Bellerose, Inc. and is a member of the Historic House Trust of New York City.

Our farm animals and tranquil agrarian environment provide the opportunity to leave the hectic daily pace behind for an enjoyable visit to a farm without leaving the city.

The Farm Museum is open daily year-round from 10am to 5pm from Monday to Friday. You can stroll around the farm to see our fields, livestock, vineyard, and farm implements. You may also purchase animal feed in the museum gift shop to feed our goats. On Saturdays and Sunday we provide free guided tours of the historic farmhouse, and hayrides at $2 per person (weather permitting from April through October). General admission is free except on special-event days (please view our calendar of events for a listing of paid admission dates).
