The Queens Museum of Art in Flushing hosts weekly workshops for families and children ages 5 through 12. This week kids can let their imaginations run wild while crafting three-dimensional models of futuristic cityscapes, using a multitude of supplies and building materials. The project was inspired by a relief map of New York City and its water supply system, a 540-square-foot piece created for the 1939 World's Fair that has spent most of the past seven decades in storage. The map is now on display in its entirety at the Queens Museum of Art for the first time ever. Children with special needs and those new to the English language are encouraged to attend.

If you thought creating art was difficult, imagine doing it blindfolded. That's how performing artist Taisha Paggett made her colored-crayon performance series, Decomposition of a Continuous Whole, at The Studio Museum in Harlem. Paggett, a dancer and choreographer, used a series of predetermined movements to create rows of crayon drawings on a gallery wall, all while her eyes were covered. Children can take on this challenge as well, in a session that encourages them to become more in tune with their other senses.

Also at the Studio Museum, from 1:00 to 2:00pm is an interactive and informative tour of the exhibit Fore with a knowledgeable museum educator. Fore is the highly anticipated fourth installment of the Studio Museum’s “F” series, which includes Freestyle (2001), Frequency (2005–06) and Flow (2008). Like its popular and critically acclaimed predecessors, Fore is a non-thematic group presentation reflecting a multitude of ideas, approaches and processes. The tour will have something for everyone: adults, families and kids of all ages are welcome!

Hive Learning Network NYC, dedicated to the integration of education and digital media, has teamed up with the Brooklyn Public Library for a six-month-long fashion project. "What We Wear: Hip Hop Fashion in Brooklyn" draws from the endlessly inspiring street style of the borough and involves the Bushwick, Central, East Flatbush and Williamsburg branches. Once a week at each location, between January and June, teens will head out to photograph their favorite looks, learn about style blogging and upload their shots to the Web. In addition, professionals will host master classes in such subjects as photography, blogging and Photoshop.

In June, the photos will be exhibited at the four libraries. The program is part of a two-year Hive Fashion initiative, in which organizations across New York City and Chicago will create activities for youth that result in innovative experiences and the availability of rich resources. The January 15 session begins at 4:30pm in the Central Library's youth wing.

On this day, children and adults are invited to join No Longer Empty and Resobox for a 75-minute demonstration course on Sumi-e from 1:00-2:15 pm.

More art-making and exploring activities will take place until 4:00pm.

About the Technique
Sumi-e, also called Suiboku-ga, is the art of ink wash-painting. Characteristically, it is an East Asian art, and has been practiced there for well over a thousand years. Sumi-e depicts the spirit or essence of an object or scene rather than its outward appearance--and does so in the fewest possible strokes. Because of this simplicity, the painter’s character and personality come through in his/her work. In both viewing and creating, Sumi-e is a very contemplative form of painting.

About the Instructor
Ayakoh Furukawa has practiced calligraphy through Nihonshogei-in since she was seven years old, receiving many awards. She also studied under Zen monk calligrapher and painter Sougyu Kashimoto in Osaka, Japan. In New York, she studied Japanese and Chinese Art History at Hunter College, the City University of New York where she received the Master of Fine Art. Her paintings and drawings have been exhibited internationally at numerous art institutions such as Japan Society, Jersey City Museum and the Osaka Municipal Museum of Art.

On Monday and Tuesday nights in Manhattan, Time's Up!, a grassroots bike co-op, has bike repair classes which introduce basics of bicycle maintenance. Wednesday (Brooklyn) and Thursday (Manhattan) nights are open workshops where you can bring your own bicycle and work on it yourself with the aid of Time's Up! mechanics. On Sundays there are lessons and then an open workshop in Brooklyn. Time's Up! also runs a recycle a bike program which has recycled 1000's of bicycles and put them back into the hands of new cyclists. Time's Up! is always ready to accept your donations in the NYC area. These low cost bicycles can be purchased Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday after 2pn at the Time's Up! Brooklyn space. Join NYC for the fifth annual Summer Streets! On Saturday, August 4, 11 and 18 from 7 am to 1 pm, nearly seven miles of New York City's streets will be opened up for everyone to play, run, walk and bike. From the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, along Park Avenue and connecting streets you can rock climb at Spring Street, receive a free bike helmet at 51st Street, soar through the air on a zip line at Foley Square or just stroll along and experience the city's streets in a new way—all for free.

Activities at Summer Streets will be based at six rest stops, and are all free! The stops will host performances and activities for all ages, free bike rentals and water stations.

TD Five Boro Bike Tour

In the TD Five Boro Bike Tour, approximately 32,000 cyclists pedal their way through all five boroughs on a traffic-free, 40-mile course. As its name suggests, the event is a tour, not a race—so participants can relax and enjoy one of the best ways to see the City. Alas, the tour is so popular (it's the largest bike event in North America) that a lottery was implemented to fill spots during registration this year. You can still enter, though, as a VIP or by committing to raise money for one of the Tour's charity partners. And, of course, you can always attend the event as a spectator.
