The FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition is an exciting, multinational competition that teams professionals and young people to solve an engineering design problem in an intense and competitive way. Students from local schools including Lehman (Queens) and the H.S. of Computers & Technology participating in this competition present their uniquely designed robots and discuss their development and mechanical design. Interact with these one-of-a-kind robots and learn about the strategies and challenges students face in their annual robotic competitions.

About FIRST
FTC is designed for those who want to compete head to head, using a sports model. Teams of up to 10 students are responsible for designing, building, and programming their robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. The robot kit is reusable from year-to-year and is programmed using a variety of languages. Teams, including coaches, mentors and volunteers, are required to develop strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles. Awards are given for the competition as for well as for community outreach, design, and other real-world accomplishments.

The Greatest Thrills, All October Long

This Halloween season, Syfy presents a selection of spooky and family friendly events as part of their 31 days of HalloweeNYC. It all kicks off on October 14 and 15 in Flatiron Plaza with the Creepy Crawly Craft Fair. Participants can get into the Halloween spirit with craft- and costume-making activities with local artists and designers. Stop by Union Square Park on October 20 or Washington Square Park on October 21 to get your snapshot taken in the Photo BOO-th. Groups of one to five people can strike a pose in front of a green screen and then choose from several backgrounds. Everyone who participates leaves with their very own Syfy HalloweeNYC photo souvenir. Lastly, Gansevoort Plaza will play host to a face-painting event known as Face Off Face Painting on October 28 and 29 (named after Syfy's television series). All events take place from 11am to 7pm on the dates noted above.
