The Eleventh Annual Drums Along the Hudson®: A Native American Festival will take place on Sunday, May 19th, 2013 in Upper Manhattan’s Inwood Hill Park from 11:00 am until 6:00 pm, rain or shine. This event, which is FREE to the public, is presented by Lotus Music & Dance in collaboration with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, sponsored in part by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Councilman Robert Jackson, and WABC-TV.

A free, multi cultural family-oriented festival, Drums Along the Hudson® includes exhibitions of world dance and drumming traditions with host Louis Mofsie and the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers, Heyna Second Sons and Silver Cloud Drum Group, as well as Native American crafts and international foods. The festival combines a celebration of Native American heritage, culture, and art with the diversity of New York City itself. In keeping with the underlying theme of environmental appreciation and education, Drums Along the Hudson® will continue to feature an Environmental Tent which will include appearances by Captain Planet, courtesy of the Captain Planet Foundation.

During the day, individuals and organizations will be honored for their contributions to environmental and humanitarian causes. This year's honorees are Grammy Award Winner, Singer and Songwriter Joanne Shenandoah and Author Doug George for their contributions to Native American arts and culture, and Deborah Harvey-Koenigsberger, Founder and President of Hearts of Gold, for her huminatarian services. We will also plant a Tree of Peace in a ceremony, officiated by Mohawk Elder Tom Porter, which pays tribute to the memory of community leaders we have lost in the previous year. Sandra Bookman, weekend anchor for WABC-TV will host the event.

This year, there will be free bicycle valets for attendees who ride their bike to the park.

Directions: To reach Inwood Hill Park, take the 1 train to 215th Street or the A train to 207th Street. The Entrance to the park is at 218th Street and Indian Road, four blocks west of Broadway. By car, it is just north of the Dyckman Street exit off the Henry Hudson Parkway.

Though Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) isn't officially until November 1, you can commemorate the Mexican holiday early at the National Museum of the American Indian. This colorful, family-friendly celebration features live music and dance performances as well as hands-on workshops. Create special Day of the Dead crafts like vibrant papier-mâché calaveras (skulls), and make your own version of acalaca—a smiling, ornately decorated white skull mask usually worn to symbolize revival after death. Later, visit the altar de muertos, designed to honor deceased ancestors with ofrendas (offerings). This specific altar will be decorated with ceramic skulls, masses of marigold flowers and calaveritas de azúcar (sugar skulls), customarily eaten by friends and relatives. The event runs from 1 to 4pm in the Diker Pavilion and first-floor lobby of the museum. During the annual Day of the Dead celebration, some believe that souls of the deceased return to visit living relatives, and festivities like this help welcome them.

Don’t forget to venture to the Crafts tent located on the northern lawn. Neighboring the Crafts tent on the north western side of the park is the Pumpkin Patch! Check in with our pumpkin patch team to receive a ticket for a free pumpkin and then head over to our decorating station! Pumpkins will be given out to children who are present at the Fest and are on a first come first serve basis.

5/26/12 Governors Island Alliance Family Festival

Governors Island Alliance is kicking off another exciting season on the Island with the 8th annual opening-day Family Festival on Saturday. Come to Nolan Park for music, theater, dance, arts and crafts, face painting, maritime activities and more. Performances will run throughout the afternoon featuring Astrograss, the Maybelles, Arm of the Sea Theater and the Quantico Marine Corps Band.

Representatives of the city Department of Transportation will also be on hand for free bike helmet fitting--and giving away helmets while supplies last and demonstrating their new bike share station.

Performances will run throughout the day featuring the following performances:

Astrograss: This high energy band gets kids and their parents dancing and singing together, with a unique blend of bluegrass, old time, and folk music. Astrograss concerts feature sing-a-longs, dance contests, and fiddle hoedowns. Their original songs cover topics like spelling, whether Pluto is a planet, bedtime, and the many neighborhoods of Brooklyn.

The Maybelles: This harmony driven Americana band led by Jan Bell, is accompanied by Rima Fand and Megan Palmer. With Celtic and Appalachian influences, the band has made the Top Ten Folk Albums (Village Voice), 4 Stars (Now Toronto), and People’s Choice Album of the year (Independent Music Awards).

Arm of the Sea Theater: For over twenty years, Arm of the Sea Theater has been developing a style of magical realism that marries the mythic and the everyday, humanity and the earth, visual arts and natural science, poetry and politics. Their large-scale productions incorporate ancient theatrical devices for shared enchantment and visual storytelling. With music, gesture and stunning visuals, they illuminate the links between human communities and the life-support processes of this living planet.

The event and the ferry to the island are FREE and no pre-registration is required! Bring a picnic lunch and come join us for a fun afternoon on the Island!

Free Ferry
To get to Governors Island you can take the free ferry from the Battery Maritime Building at 10 South Street in Lower Manhattan starting at 10am, starting at 11am the ferry will run every half hour. You can also come via free ferry from Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park starting at 11am that will run continuously (roughly every 20 minutes). The last ferries leave Governors Island at 7pm.

Family Affair offers an ever-changing program that includes hands-on activities developed in collaboration with teaching artists, performances, guided tours, screenings, and many other surprises.

Who doesn’t love that photo card from 1983 of the whole sweatered family at the mall, with its woodgrain border and bedazzled holiday greeting? Celebrate the schmaltz this year at the Etsy Labs in Brooklyn with our Making Smiles Bright: A Holiday Photo Card Event!

On Thursday December 8 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. ET, Etsy Labs Brooklyn will be open for you to bring friends, family, colleagues and comrades to get your photo taken and turned into a holiday card.

Choose from one of three backdrops that we have hand-curated and decorated with merchandise direct from Etsy holiday shops and sellers (see details below), smile wide and bright, and leave with a digital file that you can customize and circulate near and far. Our long-time partners from the Magnolia Photo Booth Co. will be on hand to get those pictures print and sent.

We’ve also partnered with Moo for a 15 percent discount if you want to turn your digital file into a printed greeting card (discount codes will be distributed at the event). If you’d rather print at home, we’ll be leading small groups in workshops to make your own envelopes from paper ephemera (feel free to bring a favorite new or vintage paper to use). Every hour, we’ll be raffling off a chance to win one piece from the vignettes for use in your own holiday decor.Choose one of these vignettes for your picture-perfect snapshot.

“I’m Dreaming of a (Black and) White Christmas”
So much of this season’s cheer is made up of holiday stories and songs that have made a lasting impression on us. This vignette will be decked out with seasonal decor by Etsy handmade sellers made from text, sheet music and other printed matter.
