Jazz at Lincoln Center hosts its second Listening Party of the 2011-2012 season with author Tad Hershorn as he discusses his new book, Norman Granz: The Man Who Used Jazz for Justice (University of California Press) with Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Ken Druker.

“Any book on my life would start with my basic philosophy of fighting racial prejudice. I loved jazz, and jazz was my way of doing that,” Norman Granz told Tad Hershorn during the final interviews given for this book. Granz, who died in 2001, was iconoclastic, independent, immensely influential, often thoroughly unpleasant--and one of jazz’s true giants. Granz played an essential part in bringing jazz to audiences around the world, defying racial and social prejudice as he did so, and demanding that African-American performers be treated equally everywhere they toured. In this definitive biography, Hershorn recounts Granz’s story: creator of the legendary jam session concerts known as Jazz at the Philharmonic; founder of the Verve record label; pioneer of live recordings and worldwide jazz concert tours; manager and recording producer for numerous stars, including Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson.

Jazz at Lincoln Center hosts its third Listening Party of the 2011-2012 season with pianist Eric Reed as he discusses his new CD Something Beautiful (JW3 Records) with Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Ken Druker and performs solo piano selections.

Award-winning pianist and composer Eric Scott Reed began playing the piano at age two and was performing in his father’s Baptist church in Philadelphia by age five. After study at Philadelphia's Settlement Music School and Los Angeles’ Colburn School of Arts, Reed embarked upon a professional career that has taken him all over the world. His credits include Wynton Marsalis, Jessye Norman, Quincy Jones, Patti Labelle and others. Reed has taught at The Juilliard School of Music and gives master classes and lecture demonstrations on the history of music. His other musical ventures include over 20 recordings as a leader, scoring for Eddie Murphy’s comedy, “Life;” and musical direction for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Currently Reed is in residence with the Ebony Repertory Theatre of Los Angeles, as musical director of Regina Taylor's “Crowns.” In 2011, Reed was named in the “Rising Star, Piano” category in Downbeat magazine’s 59th Annual International Critics Poll.

Something Beautiful marks Reed’s 20th CD as a leader--a milestone for a musician of the pianist’s young age. The recording exemplifies Reed’s extraordinary songwriting and ability to deftly re-imagine some of the most remarkable tunes in the jazz, gospel and pop idioms. On this new recording, Reed, one of today’s most innovative jazz pianists, is joined by bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Rodney Green who serve as the ideal match for Reed’s intense and urging style.

Jazz at Lincoln Center hosts its fourth Listening Party of the 2011-2012 season with Gretchen Parlato as she discusses her latest CD, The Lost And Found (ObliqSound) with Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Ken Druker.

Gretchen Parlato's 2009 sophomore breakthrough, In a Dream, signaled the arrival of an incredibly inventive modern jazz singer. Her follow-up, The Lost and Found, demonstrates that she has staying power. In a Dream garnered international acclaim with Billboard magazine hailing it as "the most alluring jazz vocal album of 2009"; it also made it onto the top year-end polls for Jazz Times, the Boston Globe, the Village Voice and NPR. The Lost and Found shows immediate weight and intensity, exposing a greater dynamic range. "I feel like I stepped out of my own way and allowed myself to be more revealing and vulnerable through the music," reflects Parlato.

Revealing a seamless, crystalline, and more importantly, personal voice, Parlato says that the overall theme of The Lost and Found is about accepting opposition and embracing the ebbs and flows of life. "One day we may think we've found all the answers, and then something suddenly happens that makes us feel completely lost as though nothing makes sense. This is life. Accepting that we are always in transition without attaching a judgment to the experience is freeing. We are always the lost and found."

Uniquely interdisciplinary choreographer-dancers Eiko & Koma perform the world premiere of Water with two-time Grammy Award–winning Native American flutist-composer Robert Mirabal. Inspired by their 1995 piece River, this site-specific work commissioned by Lincoln Center takes place in the iconic Paul Milstein Pool and is a significant part of Eiko& Koma’s Retrospective Project, a multiyear, multifaceted examination ofthe duo’s 40 years of artistic collaboration.

Performances of Water coincide with the July 19 opening of Residue: An Installation by Eiko & Koma, a major exhibition at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts that features artifacts collected during the Retrospective Project.

Water was commissioned by Lincoln Centerfor Lincoln Center Out of Doors 2011. It is also a National Performance Network (NPN) Creation Fund Project co-commissioned by the Skirball Cultural Center, Los Angeles, in partnership with Lincoln Center and NPN. Robert Mirabal’sparticipation was made possible by a grant from Meet The Composer through its Commissioning Music/USA program. Additional funding was provided to Eiko &Koma by the New York State Council on the Arts Dance Program and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

The Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad is a program that Jazz at Lincoln Center has had the honor of administering for the United States Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The mission of The Rhythm Road is to share America’s unique contribution to the world of music and to promote cross-cultural understanding and exchange among nations worldwide. Since 2005, Jazz at Lincoln Center and the U.S. Department of State have produced ten tours each year that represent American music to overseas audiences.

Building on the rich legacy of the legendary Jazz Ambassadors, the program has expanded in recent years to include music that is quintessentially American. Musicians are invited to apply in the genres of jazz, blues, bluegrass, Cajun, country, gospel, hip hop/urban, and zydeco. Ten quartets have been selected from a national pool of applicants and together they reflect the talent and diversity of musicians across the United States.

The artists on The Rhythm Road will travel in Spring and Fall of 2010, performing in countries that are not regularly visited by American musicians. Tour activities include public concerts, master classes, lecture-demonstrations, workshops, jam sessions, media outreach, and collaborations with local musicians. In addition, each ensemble is presented in a free concert at the National Geographic Society in Washington D.C. and at our wonderful home in New York City, Frederick P. Rose Hall.

Nasar Abadey and SUPERNOVA (Washington, D.C.) performs jazz in a multi-dimensional and multi-directional way—from crossing the borders of jazz and continuing beyond space and time. Nasar Abadey and SUPERNOVA perform and explore various jazz elements such as traditional African rhythms, bebop, fusion, Afro-Cuban, Afro Brazilian, and free form. Since the band was formed in 1979, it has sought opportunities for a wider, freer expression of music. The quartet’s musical inspirations include John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, and Duke Ellington. Nasar Abadey and SUPERNOVA see touring as an opportunity to engage in dialogue about jazz music, the elements particular to the genre, its history, and the mixture of cultures that contributed to the creation of jazz as an art form.

Xian Zhang’s rising international status in the conducting world comes as a major feat. She became the first woman to conduct the Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden in its main hall in Germany in 2008, and she was the first woman to lead any Italian symphony orchestra when the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi appointed her as music director in 2009. On Monday, Zhang will conduct the Julliard Orchestra at Alice Tully Hall. The show will include Anton Webern’s Passacaglia, Op. 1, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante for Violin and Viola, K. 364, and Gustav Mahler’s reorchestration of Robert Schumann’s fourth symphony. Named after Henrik Strindberg’s “Puff” composition, this vibrant group is now in its fifth year as a Juilliard Resident Ensemble. Their exciting performances have introduced audiences to the woodwind quintet repertoire through innovative entry points, stimulating increased enthusiasm for the genre. Puff! Quintet is a featured group at The Juilliard School’s annual Focus! Festival and recently won the 2009 J.C. Arriaga Chamber Music Competition, and was the only wind group in the 2009 Naumburg Chamber Music Competition finals.

Come learn what Swing University has to offer at a FREE Open House. This event will introduce you to Phil Schaap and some of the faculty of Swing University and give you an overview of the upcoming courses.

Swing University explains jazz, its development, and how to be an effective listener. Class members learn how to follow song form, understand the uses of ensemble and soloist in a jazz performance, and explore the significant events in the music's history. Taught with the help of special guest lecturers, Swing University offers a wide range of courses to suit all jazz lovers from novices to jazz cats.

		Audubon’s Watercolors for The Birds of America In 1863 Lucy Bakewell Audubon, the widow of John James Audubon, sold to The New-York Historical Society her husband’s preparatory watercolors for his seminal work The Birds of America (published serially in London between 1827 and 1838). The Society owns all 435 known preparatory watercolors for its 435 plates. In addition, the N-YHS holds a rare, double-elephant edition of The Birds of America, as well as the octavo edition and Audubon's Ornithological Biography, letters, ephemera, etc. In aggregate, these collections in the museum and library form the largest single repository of Auduboniana in the world.
		Bella C. Landauer Collection of Business and Advertsing Ephemera Bella C. Landauer (1874-1960) was an insatiable collector of objects made for business and advertising purposes. In 1926, she gave a large portion of her collection to the New-York Historical Society. These collections - more than 375,000 pieces of ephemera and 4,500 three-dimensional objects - are an essential resource for scholars of American history.
		Collection Highlights Highlights from the New-York Historical Society Museum
		Dutch New York
		Hudson River School The N-YHS holds one of the oldest and most comprehensive collections of landscape painting by artists of the Hudson River School, the first school of truly American art to garner worldwide recognition and fame. Artists, poets and writers forged the first self-consciously “American” landscape vision and literary voice, grounded in the exploration of the natural world as a source of spiritual renewal and as an expression of national identity, first expressed through the scenery of the Hudson River Valley.
		The Dr. Egon Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass The New-York Historical Society's entire collection of 132 Tiffany lamps and three windows came as the gift of a single collector, Dr. Egon Neustadt, in 1984. Dr. Neustadt, an Austrian immigrant, New York City orthodontist, and successful real estate developer, began collecting Tiffany lamps in 1935, when he and his wife Hildegard purchased their first lamp in a Greenwich Village antique shop. Over the course of five decades, Dr. Neustadt amassed one of the most important and most comprehensive Tiffany collections in the world.
		The Folk Art Collection of Elie Nadelman The avant-garde sculptor Elie Nadelman (1882-1946) is widely recognized for his elegant and spare modernist sculpture. Less well-known is Nadelman's role as a pioneer in collecting folk art in this country and his impressive material legacy acquired by the Historical Society in 1937. Nadelman's acquisitions spanned a variety of media, including furniture, sculpture, paintings, ceramics, glass, iron, pewter, drawings and watercolors, and household tools. The N-YHS holds more than 1,600 objects collected by Nadelman, more than any other single repository.
