The Eleventh Annual Drums Along the Hudson®: A Native American Festival will take place on Sunday, May 19th, 2013 in Upper Manhattan’s Inwood Hill Park from 11:00 am until 6:00 pm, rain or shine. This event, which is FREE to the public, is presented by Lotus Music & Dance in collaboration with the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, sponsored in part by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Councilman Robert Jackson, and WABC-TV.

A free, multi cultural family-oriented festival, Drums Along the Hudson® includes exhibitions of world dance and drumming traditions with host Louis Mofsie and the Thunderbird American Indian Dancers, Heyna Second Sons and Silver Cloud Drum Group, as well as Native American crafts and international foods. The festival combines a celebration of Native American heritage, culture, and art with the diversity of New York City itself. In keeping with the underlying theme of environmental appreciation and education, Drums Along the Hudson® will continue to feature an Environmental Tent which will include appearances by Captain Planet, courtesy of the Captain Planet Foundation.

During the day, individuals and organizations will be honored for their contributions to environmental and humanitarian causes. This year's honorees are Grammy Award Winner, Singer and Songwriter Joanne Shenandoah and Author Doug George for their contributions to Native American arts and culture, and Deborah Harvey-Koenigsberger, Founder and President of Hearts of Gold, for her huminatarian services. We will also plant a Tree of Peace in a ceremony, officiated by Mohawk Elder Tom Porter, which pays tribute to the memory of community leaders we have lost in the previous year. Sandra Bookman, weekend anchor for WABC-TV will host the event.

This year, there will be free bicycle valets for attendees who ride their bike to the park.

Directions: To reach Inwood Hill Park, take the 1 train to 215th Street or the A train to 207th Street. The Entrance to the park is at 218th Street and Indian Road, four blocks west of Broadway. By car, it is just north of the Dyckman Street exit off the Henry Hudson Parkway.

Although Earth Day is officially on Monday, April 22nd, there are many events happening this weekend!

Given the Earth's rapidly changing climate and the dramatic increase in the frequency of catastrophic natural disasters, there is more urgency than ever to be focused on the environment. Show some love for our home planet and learn how to help the cause at NYC's annual Earth Day celebrations. This year, Earth Day New York is presenting performances and activities for kids, sustainability talks and more in Grand Central Terminal's Vanderbilt Hall from 10am to 6pm, April 20–22. The main outdoor event takes place in Union Square on April 21, 11am to 6pm, featuring live performances, a sneak peek at some innovative new earth-friendly vehicles and exhibitions and displays from environmental organizations and businesses. For a really hands-on Earth Day commemoration, help clean up one of the City's many beaches and parks. Head to Staten Island's Fort Wadsworth at 10am on April 20 or Great Kills Park at 1pm on April 21 to volunteer your time and help restore the beauty of a borough that was devastated by Hurricane Sandy just a few months ago.

Background
The Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade & New Year's Day Firecracker Ceremony was founded in 1999 to provide New york's Chinese American community with a large scale celebration on par with those in San Francisco and Los Angeles. In recent years it has suppressed it, the event has grown into a New York City-wide affair and New York's biggest winter tourist attraction, luring thousands of visitors from all over the United States and the world. With the dog parade 5 years ago and 4 years ago the Pig race, 2- colorful float, 20 antique cars, 200 cultural performers & 3000 marchers participating making the parade more exciting. Last year, a record 500,000 spectators flooded the streets of Chinatown to welcome the year of the Rabbit. A truly pan-Asian spectacle, the Parade features cultural performers and organizations from all across Asia, including China, Korea, Japan, Vietman, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore and Hispanic & American dancer, bands and cultural floats.

Description

A colorful spectacle featuring floats, marching bands, lion and dragon dancers, antique cars, beauty queens, Asian & Hispanic musical performers, magicians and acrobats, and local organizations. The floats will feature various cultural performances and special guests. Over 6,000 individuals will march in the Parade, which will span every major street in Chinatown. This is the biggest winter parade in the East Coast and a national and international tourist attraction. Elected officials, celebrities and community leaders are scheduled to take part in the Parade, which will be covered by local, national and international media. An outdoor cultural festival will take place at the Sara Roosevelt Park by Canal St & Forsyth St that will feature booths and performances by musicians, dancers, and martial artists.

Beethoven: String Quartet in F Major, Opus 59 No. 1 "Razumovsky"

Please join Manhattan Youth and the Tribeca Chamber Players for an informal presentation of the first of Beethoven's three Opus 59 string quartets, written for Andreas Razumovsky, the Russian ambassador to the Habsburg Court in Vienna.

Come as you are, bring your kids, and join your neighbors for great music up close in an intimate setting!

This is the fifth of 14 performances of all the Beethoven string quartets--The Beethoven Cycle--performed free on select Monday evenings through May by the Tribeca Chamber Players.

The evenings are informal, much like quartet performances in Beethoven's time, when gatherings of musicians and friends shared music in settings more intimate than the concert hall of today.

The first annual, November 10th Jazz & Colors mixes iconic Central Park, a classic Autumn in New York backdrop, and a unique concept featuring one set list, two sets, and 30 jazz ensembles—all performing their own variations at the same time.

Arranged by Jazz & Colors, New York City Parks & Recreation, and the Central Park Conservancy, the free event kicks off at noon and winds down by 4 p.m., with bands scattered throughout key points of Central Park (spanning midtown Manhattan to Harlem) for the public’s strolling enjoyment. They will set up and play at 30 well-known landmarks, among them the Naumburg Bandshell, the Delacorte Theater, the Harlem Meer, Duke Ellington Circle, the East Meadow and the Glade Arch. Other groups of musicians will play at the park’s major entrances and next to several playgrounds.

On Saturday April 28th, CITYarts will be finishing a restoration process on their Alice in Wall Street Land mural on Chambers Street, between West Street and Greenwich Street. They will be repainting chipped areas and redesigning larger areas of the mural. CITYarts is working in collaboration with all members of the community and invite festivalgoers to join the activity. All are welcome!

Families can attend a FREE Special Screening of Freej Folklore presented by Tribeca's Cultural Partner, the Doha Film Institute, and directed by Animator and TFF Juror Mohammed Saeed Harib. 'Freej' (meaning 'neighborhood' in Emirati Arabic) is the smash hit 3D animated series from the United Arab Emirates. It is a hilarious take on modern life in Dubai through the wisdom and humor of four old national women tackling everyday problems. The series expanded into 'Freej Folklore' - a stage show combining a unique mix of live and virtual animation, film, light, and acrobatic performances across a 40 meter stage with multilayer screen projections. Jazz at Lincoln Center hosts its twelfth Listening Party of the season with the brothers-and-sister team of clarinetist Anat Cohen, trumpeter Avishai Cohen and saxophonist Yuval Cohen as they discuss the latest CD from their group 3 Cohens, Family (Anzic Records) with Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Ken Druker.

Family was recorded in Brooklyn and features the three Israeli horn players/siblings in league with a swinging New York rhythm section: pianist Aaron Goldberg, double-bassist Matt Penman and drummer Gregory Hutchinson. The sextet is joined by iconic vocalist Jon Hendricks. Family presents some top-notch originals, including Avishai's loving title feature for the group's characteristic three-horn interweave and two Charles Mingus-inflected numbers (Yuval's "Blues for Dandi's Orange Bull Chasing an Orange Sack" and Avishai's "With the Soul of the Greatest of Them All"). The disc also includes a winning take on Duke Ellington's "The Mooch," an international retooling of the New Orleans standard "Tiger Rag" and a freshly colored interpretation of "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans?" born of the group's great love for and experience with the music of Louis Armstrong. The sextet is joined by iconic vocalist Jon Hendricks for the vintage "On the Sunny Side of the Street" and "Roll 'em, Pete."

"One of the great movers of modern dance" (The New York Times) and "one of modern dance's great living dance-makers" (New York Magazine), David Parsons and Parsons Dance return to The Joyce Theater with two world premieres. David Parsons' newest dance, Round My World, is set to digitized solo cello music by musician/composer Zoe Keating. Keating makes intricate, complex and entrancing ribbons of sound, which David Parsons wraps and unwraps around six dancers. Emerging choreographer Kate Skarpetowska is a former Parsons dancer. Parsons Dance also will premiere her newest work, A Stray's Lullaby, which was created on the Parsons dancers and is set to an original musical score by Kenji Bunch. An intimate work set on four dancers, A Stray's Lullaby portrays down and out characters who cling to redemption and hope. The program also features David Parsons' 2003 classic Swing Shift, with music by Kenji Bunch; and a duet excerpted from David Parsons' 1994 hit Step Into My Dream, set to music by Dr. Billy Taylor, with costumes by Missoni. All performances include David Parsons' stroboscopic masterwork, Caught.

The performance also features scenes from Craig Teper’s documentary, Man In The Right Seat, about Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell.
