For seven weeks this spring, nine 16-to 20-foot-tall, human-shaped stone figures by Swiss-born, New York-based artist Ugo Rondinone, will transform Rockefeller Center, inhabiting the plaza between 49th and 50th Streets as if transported from another time. The work, Human Nature, will be free to the public and is on view April 23 through June 7, 2013.

Human Nature is a stark contrast to its highly developed architectural surroundings in Midtown Manhattan. When the work is installed in April, the figures will populate the plaza where the famous Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is displayed, the massive forms of their legs and shoulders forming post-and-lintel structures beneath and among which visitors will be able to walk.

Human Nature is presented by Nespresso; the exhibition is organized by Public Art Fund and Tishman Speyer.

If you thought creating art was difficult, imagine doing it blindfolded. That's how performing artist Taisha Paggett made her colored-crayon performance series, Decomposition of a Continuous Whole, at The Studio Museum in Harlem. Paggett, a dancer and choreographer, used a series of predetermined movements to create rows of crayon drawings on a gallery wall, all while her eyes were covered. Children can take on this challenge as well, in a session that encourages them to become more in tune with their other senses.

Also at the Studio Museum, from 1:00 to 2:00pm is an interactive and informative tour of the exhibit Fore with a knowledgeable museum educator. Fore is the highly anticipated fourth installment of the Studio Museum’s “F” series, which includes Freestyle (2001), Frequency (2005–06) and Flow (2008). Like its popular and critically acclaimed predecessors, Fore is a non-thematic group presentation reflecting a multitude of ideas, approaches and processes. The tour will have something for everyone: adults, families and kids of all ages are welcome!

Hive Learning Network NYC, dedicated to the integration of education and digital media, has teamed up with the Brooklyn Public Library for a six-month-long fashion project. "What We Wear: Hip Hop Fashion in Brooklyn" draws from the endlessly inspiring street style of the borough and involves the Bushwick, Central, East Flatbush and Williamsburg branches. Once a week at each location, between January and June, teens will head out to photograph their favorite looks, learn about style blogging and upload their shots to the Web. In addition, professionals will host master classes in such subjects as photography, blogging and Photoshop.

In June, the photos will be exhibited at the four libraries. The program is part of a two-year Hive Fashion initiative, in which organizations across New York City and Chicago will create activities for youth that result in innovative experiences and the availability of rich resources. The January 15 session begins at 4:30pm in the Central Library's youth wing.

This weekend, the National Park Service hosts Civil War weekend on Governors Island. Visitors can meet living historians who will provide family-friendly activities, historic weapons demonstrations, music and other programs. Meet the Civil War soldiers and women of Governors Island from the summer of 1863.

After stopping by Fort Jay or Castle Williams, head down to Colonels Row on Saturday for the first ever Summer Winds concert at 2 PM. This concert features more than 80 wind instruments and is entirely free to the public.

On Sunday, meet the chickens and goats at Earth Matter Compost Learning Center and then see the Earth Tub outside the Harbor School. From 10am to 2pm, see where 8,000 pounds of scraps generated from Brooklyn green markets end up and how they are composted.

And then, from 2pm to 5pm, you can join a bike tour with artist Rob Swainston to see the Storm King exhibition of Mark di Suvero’s works while also discussing public art and stopping periodically to draw various “stop and look” moments.

All of these great programs are of course in addition to the ongoing art exhibits and programs happening throughout the Island.

The Beatles Hidden Gallery features more than 30 recently-discovered candid images of the iconic rock group, taken in 1963 and 1964 by British photographer and award-winning cinematographer Paul Berriff. These intimate photographs—shot in England around the time of the group’s first tour of the United States which included two landmark performances at Carnegie Hall—showcase the young band on the cusp of superstardom.

Pace Prints, in cooperation with the Keith Haring Foundation, is pleased to present its first exhibition of prints and small-scale multiples by Keith Haring. The exhibition focuses on editioned works created between 1983 and 1990.

Printmaking was an essential part of Haring’s work. He believed in the inherent democracy of creating limited editions that could extend the reach of his imagery in an attainable and affordable manner. Haring was as fascinated by the process of printmaking as he was with any medium he tackled, and he worked hands-on with numerous print publishers in the USA, Europe and Japan. In the course of his 10-year career, Haring created over 60 separate and distinct editions on paper using a variety of methods including lithograph, silk-screen, etching, embossing and aquatint. Ever prolific, Haring also created small-scale multiples in aluminum, wood, concrete and terracotta, several of which are also on view.

Highlights of the exhibition are works from The Blueprint Drawings, 1990, a series of 17 silk-screens based on Sumi ink drawings Keith completed in 1980-81. The imagery in these works presages the iconic language associated with Keith Haring ever after - images of a pyramid, flying saucer, dog and crawling baby are intermixed with wandering figures and human/animal/extraterrestrial activities. This intentional juxtaposition of his “icons” conjures up different meanings, relationships and narratives, taking some inspiration from the “cut up” methods of William Burroughs and Brion Gysin. The largest work in the exhibition, Untitled, 1986, a large-scale print depicting a hydra-like creature is known to be one of the rarest in Haring’s oeuvre. This etching was done in a small edition of 24.

The exhibition will also include a special Pop Shop installation. The original Pop Shop, founded by Haring in 1986, operated in downtown Manhattan for nearly 20 years. Haring viewed the store as an extension of his work, a unique venue where his imagery could be accessible to everyone. In keeping with his vision, the Pop Shop installation at Pace Prints will feature a recreation of the Pop Shop mural environment. In addition to artwork, the Pop Shop installation will feature pieces from two of the Keith Haring Foundation’s recent collaborations: Keith Haring by Nicholas Kirkwood, haute couture footwear by the shooting-star British shoe designer, Nicholas Kirkwood; and Keith Haring by Patricia Field, apparel and accessories designed by the celebrated New York stylist and fashion designer, Patricia Field.

Time Warner Center presents an exciting exhibition dedicated to the renowned artist and master of Surrealism, Salvador Dalí. Arranged by Galerie Elysees and curated by Mr. Beniamino Levi, President of the Stratton Foundation, and Enrique Sabater y Bonany, the exhibition features a rare collection of original Dali artworks that will delight and surprise audiences.

The Collection consists of sixteen stunning museum size bronze sculptures featuring the renowned and ‘Toreador Hallucinogene’ and ‘Profile of Time’. The highlight of the exhibition are two monumental sculptures bound to leave visitors awestruck — ‘The Persistence of Memory’ and ‘Woman Aflame’, standing respectively 16.5 feet and 11.5 feet tall.

This exhibition also features over forty original drawings, watercolors, collages and studies for important paintings on show for the first time ever in New York. These original artworks are on loan from the famous private collection of Enrique Sabater y Bonany, who worked as Dalí’s private secretary and confidante for 12 years from 1968 to 1981.
