Observe the splendor of the park’s autumn palette of Rockefeller Park while listening to poetry. Join poet and naturalist Dr. Jonathan Curley for “Odes to Autumn,” a poetry walk celebrating the arrival of fall with poems, revels, songs, and ballads among the fallen leaves. Colorful lyrics will be recited throughout the journey, from John Keats to Ella Fitzgerald, ending by the Lily Pond near engraved poems by Mark Strand and Seamus Heaney. 

Concurrently, artist Elise Engler will be distributing colored pencils, oil pastels and drawing pencils for participants who want to sketch. The workshop will call attention to the dramatic changes of colors in nature, particularly at this time of year. All ages welcome.

About Misako Rocks!
Misako Rocks! developed a love for comics and manga at an early age and drew her first comic at the age of 13. She moved to New York in 2001 and worked as a a puppeteer, face painter, animal balloon maker, and art teacher while still developing her own work. Her first break came when the Onion decided to use her illustrations for their now famous “Savage Love” column, which runs every week. Shortly thereafter, Misako scored a two-book deal with Hyperion, a three-book deal with Henry Holt and a writing gig for Archie comics.

Misako has been featured in many magazines and newspapers, including Elle Girl and the New York Times. The BBC and NHK also featured her in a documentary about her comic book life. Recently, Misako was chosen as one of Nikkei Woman Magazine’s 15 Women of the year.

Recently Misako got a children’s book deal with a Japanese publisher Meijishoin. Also, she is now running a monthly comic column in AERA English Magazine in Japan!

Misako currently lives in Brooklyn, New York and spends her free time riding her vintage bike, making hip hop, kissing babies, shaking hands, slam dunking and eating lots of Onigiri!!!

Participants of all ages are invited to download a drawing application onto their touch screen mobile devices and make their own hand-held electronic drawings along with Stern! John Rocco is the illustrator of over thirty book jackets, including the covers for the bestselling Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, John will explain his own process for creating jackets and then work with the kids designing exciting new jackets for pre-existing books that they have already read. These workshops can only accommodate 25 kids, so they are first come, first served.

Making Books Sing: A Warm-up for the Brooklyn Book Festival. In 1929, New York’s first Puerto Rican librarian, Pura Belpré, transformed her East Harlem library into a welcoming community center for all. Through a blend of storytelling, music, and puppetry, young audiences will learn about Puerto Rican folklore and the library’s important role in the community. Kids sing along and become puppeteers as Pura’s stories unfold. Followed by a bookmaking workshop.

Teachers & Writers Collaborative presents a poetry-writing workshop for elementary school-aged children using Wallace Stevens’ Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird as a writing prompt. Kids ages 6 to 12 are invited to join the Whitney Museum of American Art on the High Line for a drop-in drawing workshop exploring the artistic process of painter Charles Burchfield, whose work is on view at the Whitney through October 17. Families will work with a museum educator to learn about Burchfield, who worked outdoors creating vivid watercolors, and to create drawings of New York City based on observations from the unique vantage point of the High Line.
