The Tribeca Family Festival once again invites you to the ultimate street fair and family celebration, where a dazzling array of FREE activities, performances and experiences unfold downtown in Tribeca.

Step onto the Tribeca Studios backlot and into a filmmaking experience, watch a live chef demonstration from a local restaurant, fly a kite, create life-size bubbles in the Bubble Garden, get creative in our Arts & Crafts pavilions, dance to live music and put a smile on your face. It's time to take to the streets of the neighborhood, so join in for a special day of fun!

Our Festival stages will feature special performances from current Broadway shows along with emerging talent from right here in Tribeca. Local restaurants and merchants will offer Tribeca's finest foods, refreshments, and merchandise. Families can also attend a free screening of The Smurfs film at BMCC Tribeca PAC (with a special sneak preview program of The Smurfs 2).

The whole family can enjoy the celebration at 321 Ashland Place—the new BAM Fisher building. Festivities include Story Pirates’ hilarious sketch comedy musicals—based on stories written by kids—and Urban Stages’ Blown Away by Poetry—an interactive performance and workshop with puppets and poetry—plus face-painting and many other activities.

As part of this festive day of storytelling, children are encouraged to dress up as and bring a drawing of their favorite storybook character. Those who submit a drawing will be entered to win BAMfamily season tickets!

Get ready for an energetic, interactive show at this year’s Bronx Family Day! Brought to you by SummerStage Kids presented by Disney, this special event will have families wowed by circus tricks and acrobatics and then on their feet for a memorable dance party experience! The Hell on Wheel Unicycle Club will perform unicycle stunts and maneuvers on their custom-built obstacle course, and will also offer a free “Learn-to-Unicycle” area for ages 6 and up.

David Graham and Tobin Renwick, are a high energy acrobatic, juggling and comedy duo that make up The Red Trouser Show. They have been performing in circuses and theaters, and busking all over America and internationally since 2000. Having been called “a spectacular and unique act” by the Midnight Circus, as well as a group of “amazing acrobats” by ABC News, their performances are entertaining for all ages.

Since 1995, The Bindlestiff Family Cirkus has traveled the world, bringing its unique hybrid of vaudeville, circus, Wild West shows, burlesque and sideshow to hundreds of thousands of people. The company has produced innumerable cabaret shows, custom performances, and all-ages productions in addition to sophisticated adult shows. Bindlestiff also produces the NYC Unicycle Festival, yearly held on Governor’s Island over Labor Day Weekend. Today, Bindlestiff presents The Hell on Wheel Unicycle Stunt Show, in collaboration with the Chatham Unicycle Club of Columbia County, NY.

Little Club Heads has revolutionized the idea of “family time” by providing a dance party experience for children aged 12 months to 10 years old and their parents. At their events, parents can socialize while children have an opportunity to mingle, dance, and stay fit. After over 40 events and entertaining over 35 thousand guests over the past two and half years, the New York City based business is rapidly expanding.

Governors Island Alliance is kicking off another exciting season on the Island with the 8th annual opening-day Family Festival on Saturday. Come to Nolan Park for music, theater, dance, arts and crafts, face painting, maritime activities and more. Performances will run throughout the afternoon featuring Astrograss, the Maybelles, Arm of the Sea Theater and the Quantico Marine Corps Band.

Representatives of the city Department of Transportation will also be on hand for free bike helmet fitting--and giving away helmets while supplies last and demonstrating their new bike share station.

Performances will run throughout the day featuring the following performances:

Astrograss: This high energy band gets kids and their parents dancing and singing together, with a unique blend of bluegrass, old time, and folk music. Astrograss concerts feature sing-a-longs, dance contests, and fiddle hoedowns. Their original songs cover topics like spelling, whether Pluto is a planet, bedtime, and the many neighborhoods of Brooklyn.

The Maybelles: This harmony driven Americana band led by Jan Bell, is accompanied by Rima Fand and Megan Palmer. With Celtic and Appalachian influences, the band has made the Top Ten Folk Albums (Village Voice), 4 Stars (Now Toronto), and People’s Choice Album of the year (Independent Music Awards).

Arm of the Sea Theater: For over twenty years, Arm of the Sea Theater has been developing a style of magical realism that marries the mythic and the everyday, humanity and the earth, visual arts and natural science, poetry and politics. Their large-scale productions incorporate ancient theatrical devices for shared enchantment and visual storytelling. With music, gesture and stunning visuals, they illuminate the links between human communities and the life-support processes of this living planet.

The event and the ferry to the island are FREE and no pre-registration is required! Bring a picnic lunch and come join us for a fun afternoon on the Island!

Free Ferry
To get to Governors Island you can take the free ferry from the Battery Maritime Building at 10 South Street in Lower Manhattan starting at 10am, starting at 11am the ferry will run every half hour. You can also come via free ferry from Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park starting at 11am that will run continuously (roughly every 20 minutes). The last ferries leave Governors Island at 7pm.

The VH1 Save The Music Foundation will host a family fun-day open to the public at the Anderson School. The free daylong festival will feature performances by Mat Kearney, Hanson, Hot Peas ‘N Butter, SafetySuit, The American Secrets a.k.a. the freecreditscore.com band and Brianna Kahane. The VH1 Save The Music Family Day aims to give children of all ages a stage to express their love of music, culture and creativity through an exciting interactive musical expo for families. Kick off the season at Governors Island Alliance’s seventh annual Family Festival on opening weekend—from noon to 4 on Saturday, May 28. The Alliance has lined up bands, clowns, theatrical performers, hula hoops and games, puppetcraft, an “interactive” map of New York Harbor and lots more free stuff. Nolan Park is the main stage; some happenings will happen at the Harbor Map by Yankee Pier.

The Children's Museum of the Arts joins the festival this year with its own Island-themed projects.

Schedules will be available at the Alliance information tents when you arrive at Soissons Dock and Pier 101.
The festival is funded by the J.M. Kaplan Fund and the Alliance's own supporters. The Deutsche Bank America's Foundation underwrites our volunteer program and, yes, we need volunteers.

And local schools will sponsor a variety of fundraising activities, from taekwondo lessons to hairspray painting.

Also at the Street Fair will be FREE screenings of two Family Festival films that audiences of all ages will enjoy. The Second Day, a documentary about 9/11 through a child's eyes, will be screened at 2:30pm to be followed by a short panel discussion. NIKO, a lively animation film, will begin at 4:00pm. Both screenings will be shown at BMCC Tribeca PAC (at 199 Chambers Street, between Greenwich & West Streets). Lines at BMCC begin 30 mins prior to the start of each screening. All seats are FREE and first-come, first-served.

You may know how to spot the Empire State Building or Statue of Liberty, but after a tour with an educator you will be able to find out the less famous features of the cities, such as highways, parks, and bridges that are just as important in making our city work. Test your knowledge with a quick panorama quiz, with fun prizes for those with the most urban knowledge. Then stop by the art-making studios to build your own city models.

And don’t forget to go to the theater for a workshop with artist and musician Renzo Ortega who will work with your family to make music inspired by the sounds of the city. After all that, you’ll probably be ready grab a free snack at the refreshment table. Before leaving make sure you find out what wacky creative activity the Free Style Arts Association gang have planned this month!
