Neue Galerie New York kicks off the festival on the steps of its 1914 landmark building on 86th street at 5:45pm.

The McGraw-Hill Companies: CarnegieKids Bring your little ones to these free, interactive, 45-minute concerts, especially designed for children ages three to six, but fun for the whole family! Concerts feature songs, movement, and instrument demonstrations and create opportunities for musical creativity and play.

Polygraph Lounge is the virtuosic duo of Mark Stewart and Rob Schwimmer, a multi-instrumentalist song and comedy team who specialize in musical mayhem. Their arsenal includes a didgeridoo, a theremin, a melodica, a grand piano, a tin whistle, a length of pipe, an electric guitar, two fine singing voices, a pair of rapier-sharp wits, choreography for the whole audience, and a battery of handmade, one-of-a-kind instruments. Rob and Mark have performed and recorded with an impressive and eclectic array of today’s music luminaries, including Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, Wayne Shorter, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Steve Reich, and Queen Latifah.

The Journey of the Blues to New York City

The Blues evolved out of traditions such as African-American work songs, spirituals, and country string ballads more than a century ago, and its influence can be found in popular culture from jazz to rock and roll. Join Harlem’s legendary blues artist Keith “The Captain” Gamble and his ensemble on a journey through the rich history of the Blues as it made its way from the rural South to the Big Apple, complete with spoken word, horns, drums, and that sweet sound of the Blues, featuring songs from New York City Blues legends. Presented in celebration of Black History Month and in conjunction with Community Works.

This year’s festival features a wealth of sword dancing—along with Morris dancing, Molly dancing and English folk traditions—and begins at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

Half Moon Sword is an all women’s sword team who have been dancing together since 1981. Their skillful dance displays have gained them a reputation here and in England for precision and fresh interpretations of traditional dances. Doctors, lawyers, educators, writers and mothers by day, the women of Half Moon Sword share a love of this dance form with all its ritual and mystery. The festival is their opportunity to share the excitement of sword dancing with other dancers and the public. The team has 12 dancers plus 2 musicians. Colorful floats, cooperative camels, ebullient schoolchildren and 12-foot-tall puppets descend on Spanish Harlem for this holiday procession honoring the Magi’s visit to that famous manger. Expect plenty of live music at the parade, which is cosponsored by El Museo del Barrio and the Museum of the City of New York. A festival follows on the afternoon Jan 10 at El Museo del Barrio, featuring Latin American songs, dance performances, interactive games and prizes.
