Although Earth Day is officially on Monday, April 22nd, there are many events happening this weekend!

Given the Earth's rapidly changing climate and the dramatic increase in the frequency of catastrophic natural disasters, there is more urgency than ever to be focused on the environment. Show some love for our home planet and learn how to help the cause at NYC's annual Earth Day celebrations. This year, Earth Day New York is presenting performances and activities for kids, sustainability talks and more in Grand Central Terminal's Vanderbilt Hall from 10am to 6pm, April 20–22. The main outdoor event takes place in Union Square on April 21, 11am to 6pm, featuring live performances, a sneak peek at some innovative new earth-friendly vehicles and exhibitions and displays from environmental organizations and businesses. For a really hands-on Earth Day commemoration, help clean up one of the City's many beaches and parks. Head to Staten Island's Fort Wadsworth at 10am on April 20 or Great Kills Park at 1pm on April 21 to volunteer your time and help restore the beauty of a borough that was devastated by Hurricane Sandy just a few months ago.

1/12/13-1/13/13 MulchFest 2013: Treecycle this Weekend! throughout NYC (All 5 Boroughs)

Saturday and Sunday, January 12 and 13, 2013 from 10:00am to 2:00pm

Bring your holiday tree to a designated city park to be recycled into mulch that will nourish plantings across the city!

Join the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, the New York City Department of Sanitation , and GreeNYC to recycle your Christmas trees into wood chips. These wood chips are used to nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens citywide. Or, take home your very own free bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree . More than 24,000 trees were recycled last year. Help us top this number!

How to 'Chip In.'

This year, MulchFest will take place on January 12 and 13, 2013. It’s easier than ever to chip in! There are two ways you can help.

Chipping Locations
You can bring your tree to a chipping location on January 12 and 13 from 10:00am to 2:00pm. We’ll chip your tree, and give you your very own bag of mulch!

Drop Off Locations
Or you can bring your tree to a drop-off site from Wednesday, January 9 through Sunday, January 13. Leave your tree with us, and we’ll recycle it for you later! The NYC Department of Sanitation will also be conducting special curbside collections for mulching and recycling of Christmas trees from Wednesday, January 2 through Saturday, January 12.

What to Bring
Please remember to remove all lights and ornaments before bringing the tree to a MulchFest site. Biodegradable bags will be provided if you wish to take some free mulch home. (At website, mulch is available at the map sites marked with an asterisk (*).)

Join Madison Square Park’s annual Fall Kids Fest in celebration of the Conservancy’s 10-year anniversary! Bring your young ones for a free fall-festive day especially dedicated to them and have the whole family enjoy live music, arts and crafts, face painting, pumpkin decorating, games, snacks, and much much more!

Parents, the Costume Swap is back! Head to the Costume Swap tent and bring outgrown and clean children’s costumes and swap them out for “new” garb. This is a really cost effective solution for our ever-growing children!

Make sure to check out a new addition and Kids Fest first, the Games section located on the east lawn! Children of all ages can enjoy board games presented by the New York Department of Parks and Recreation, throw a pie-in-the-face of our earnest sponsor Hill Country Chicken, and dash through an obstacle course, sponsored and designed by Deer Mountain Day Camp!

Don’t forget to venture to the Crafts tent located on the northern lawn. Make tube monsters with MSPC, egg shakers with The Little Orchestra Society, table top activities with Appleseeds and much more! Visit the Marimekko booth during Fall Kids Fest to make a colorful and fun Marimekko fabric pumpkin using their fun prints and patterns!

Neighboring the Crafts tent on the north western side of the park is the Pumpkin Patch! Check in with our pumpkin patch team to receive a ticket for a free pumpkin and then head over to our decorating station! Pumpkins will be given out to children who are present at the Fest and are on a first come first serve basis.

Fall Kids Fest is rain or shine and takes place in beautiful Madison Square Park at 23rd Street between Madison Avenue and Fifth Avenues. This free event is presented by World Class Learning Academy, NY, an international school for children ages 2-11, and Time Out Kids.

8/4/12, 8/11/12 + 8/18/12 Summer Streets Returns: Pedestrians Take Over NY's Streets with Car-Free Zones and Activities

Join NYC for the fifth annual Summer Streets! On Saturday, August 4, 11 and 18 from 7 am to 1 pm, nearly seven miles of New York City's streets will be opened up for everyone to play, run, walk and bike. From the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, along Park Avenue and connecting streets you can rock climb at Spring Street, receive a free bike helmet at 51st Street, soar through the air on a zip line at Foley Square or just stroll along and experience the city's streets in a new way—all for free.

Activities at Summer Streets will be based at six rest stops, and are all free! The stops will host performances and activities for all ages, free bike rentals and water stations.

The CO2 E Drive will begin from the Solar One building on 23rd Street and the East River at approximately 9:00am following an 8:00 am press conference with guest speaker Chris Paine, Director of Revenge of The Electric Car. From Solar One, the vehicles will embark on the CO2 E Drive route through midtown Manhattan.

Environmentally friendly vehicles (electric, hybrid and bio-fuel) will paint a huge, virtual “E” on the streets of New York using GPS technology. Progress of the vehicles in form of GPS symbols will be shown on screens in Times Square (the painting).

Following the drive, a select number of vehicles will arrive at Times Square (46th and Broadway) for a green vehicle runway presentation. The cars will remain in Times Square on display for the remainder of the afternoon.

Re-Green The World in Times Square: Help Plant a Virtual Forest!

Earth Day New York in partnership with the Green World Campaign, will launch an initiative to “Re-Green the World.” Earth Day New York will dedicate a full hour of its live programming and public service time on its Times Square partner screens to the Green World Campaign's innovative cell phone initiative inviting people to “text TREE” to fund global tree-planting. This work supports the United Nations Year of Forests 2011.

Community “swaps” provide the perfect opportunity to find new homes for things you no longer need. By taking home items that you can use, you are also helping to prevent waste from production, packaging and transportation required to get new things.

The Office of Recycling Outreach and Education coordinates the Stop ‘N’ Swap in the communities where we are working to improve recycling in order to facilitate waste prevention and material reuse. We have held 8 swaps so far, serving more than 2,500 people.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What should I bring to the Stop ‘N’ Swap?
Bring yourself! Bring family and friends. Definitely bring a tote bag or two for items you want to take home.

You are encouraged to bring clean, working and portable items you no longer need, but this is not required.

Please do not bring furniture or other large items that cannot be carried away easily.

How much does it cost to attend?
Swaps are free of charge and all items are available for the taking on a first come, first served basis.

Will I have to wait for people to take my items?
No. Your items will be placed out upon your arrival for others to take. You are free to pick up items that you can use. There is no exchange based on how much or how little you bring, or the relative expense of the items.

What happens to items leftover after the event?
Anything left at the end of the day will be sorted and recycled or donated for reuse as much as possible.

Can I drop items off before the event?
Items are only accepted during the event. We encourage you to drop off near the start to better ensure your items find a new home.

Can someone pick up my donations from my apartment?
Unfortunately, we are unable to accommodate this request.

How can I find new homes for large items or things I forgot to bring to the Stop ‘N’ Swap?
Try resources like Freecycle.org or Craigslist for miscellaneous items. You can also search a list of local charities at NYC Stuff Exchange.

Can I volunteer at the Stop ‘N’ Swap?
Thanks for offering! We can always use a helping hand at the swap. Volunteers must be 18 years or older and sign up in advance. Contact us for more information.

Following the success of Green Brooklyn...Green City in September of 2009, this year’s family-friendly event showcases government agencies, non-profits, entrepreneurs and community & corporate partners at the forefront of environmental stewardship, education and awareness.

New Green City is an official participant of the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation’s Green Event Program.
