Story Arts: Children’s Story Corner
2 pm at Museum Store
Join us and author Tonya Hegamin as she reads from her children’s book, Most Loved in All the World, an authentic and powerful account of slavery and how a handmade quilt helps a little girl leave home for freedom. With a poet’s keen ear, Hegamin tells the story of a little girl whose mother is a secret agent on the underground railroad. Before sending her daughter north to freedom, the mother sews her a quilt that both guides her with symbols and reminds her that the smiling girl in the center of the quilt is “most loved in all the world.” The book is strikingly illustrated in unique textile-collage and expressive acrylic paintings.
HandsOn: The Art of Quilt-Making
3–5 pm at Lower Level Education Space
Mixing African and traditional fabrics, this quilt workshop will take the worry out of cutting and piecing. Using fusible web, you will create works to awaken and surprise the artist in you. With the hand-quilting and tie-knotting skill you learn, you can add embellishments to complete your work.
