Join in the celebration of the release of One of Us, a new children’s book from Peggy Moss & Penny Weber. Meet the author and illustrator, make your own art, and find out about a girls’ revolution that’s just beginning! In One of Us, Roberta is frustrated to find that she doesn’t totally fit in with any of the groups at her new school. But instead of changing who she is, she stays true to herself, and in doing so inspires other kids to embrace their individuality as well. The book is being released in conjunction with Powered by Girl, a campaign from Hardy Girls Healthy Women designed to educate teen girls about the impact of media on their lives and empower them use their creativity, wit, and individuality to make a difference. With inspiring speakers, art, great food and much more, there really will be something for everyone at this event!
Bring the kids to Book Culture on Broadway (Broadway at 114th St.) at 4pm for their own book launch, recommended for ages 5 to 11. They’ll be one of the first to hear this brand-new story, read by author Peggy Moss, and will see first-hand how a book is made. Then they’ll dive into the glue & glitter with illustrator Penny Weber to create their very own starring characters, just like Roberta and her friends in One of Us!
At 6pm, the party will move to Book Culture on 112th St. (Between Broadway & Amsterdam). Come to hear some amazing speakers, including author & educator Lyn Mikel Brown (Packaging Girlhood), children’s author/illustrator Dimitrea Tokunbo and her daughters, Emily & Mercy, and girls & women advocate and humorist Betsy Sweet. Then stay on to enjoy the reception, with book-signings, interactive art projects, refreshments, prizes, and lots more! And don’t miss the exhibit of self-portraits by children’s book illustrators, on display all week at Book Culture and on sale to benefit Powered by Girl.
